One of the most successful coaches in Millersville athletics history,
Carol Miller enjoyed a distinguished tenure as field hockey mentor during her eight seasons at the helm (1985-92).
Miller guided MU to an 86-51-18 record in that span. In her first year as head coach, she skippered the Black & Gold fielders to a school-record 17 victories (17-4 overall record), and NCAA Division III regional title, and advancement to the Division III national championship match (1-0 semifinal win over Drew University and a 2-1 title game defeat to the College of New Jersey).
Under Miller’s direction, MU captured back-to-back PSAC titles in 1985 and 1986. In 1987, the Marauders won the ECAC Division III, beating area rivals F&M and Lebanon Valley in their respective semifinal and championship contests by 2-0 and 2-1 scores.
As Millersviille mentor, Miller posted five, 10-win seasons and led the Black & Gold to five NCAA tourney appearances. Eleven fielders earned NCAA All-America status during her tenure, and there were 15 all-region players and three Academic All-Americans. She was chair of the NCAA Division III All-America Field Hockey Committee from 1987 to 1990 and was vice president of the College Field Hockey Coaches Association during the 1990-91 academic year.
In addition to her prowess in field hockey, Miller was an adept coach in softball and track and field. She was head softball coach for six seasons (1988-93) and produced 64 wins, second-most in team history. And, she was assistant women’s track and field coach (with primary responsibility for the throwing disciplines) during a remarkable and dominant span (1990-92) in which the Marauders claimed three straight PSAC team championships.
Since 1993, Miller has served as head field hockey coach at her alma mater, the University of Delaware, She has guided the Blue Hens to a 129-90 record that has featured a 53-29 mark in America East Conference and Colonial Athletic Association competition.
In America East, Miller led UD to six consecutive winning seasons (1993-98), eight conference tourney semifinal appearances, and two league championship game berths. Her best season during UD’s association with America East was 15-6 in 1998.
Miller led the 2003 Delaware fielders to the Colonial Athletic Association final (14-7 record) and to the league semifinal round the previous campaign.

As an undergraduate competitor at Delaware, the East Petersburg, Pa. native was a three-time field hockey All-American (the only UD fielder to date to hold that distinction) who ranks third in career goals (46) an fourth in points (100). Miller led the Blue Hens to a runner-up finish in the 1978 AIAW Division I Championships and a third place national tourney in 1980. In track and field, she still holds the school record in the javelin (143-9 toss set in 1980). She was inducted into the UD Athletic Hall of Fame in 2001.
Miller competed in five U.S. Olympic Festival field hockey tournaments and was a five-year participant with the U.S. National Team.
