A four-year starter and letterman and a two-year captain,
Andy Stoner enjoyed a standout tennis career at Millersville and has made the sport his vocation.
At MU, Stoner paired with Ted Snyder (fellow 2004 MU Athletic Hall of Fame inductee) to earn NCAA Division II All-America doubles honors in 1985 and 1986, reaching the quarterfinal round both years.
Stoner excelled in PSAC postseason competition as a Millersville undergraduate. He claimed the conference No. 1 singles flight titles twice (1984 and 1986), the No. 2 singles flight crown in 1985, and the No. 5 singles flight championship in 1983. He teamed up with Snyder to earn three PSAC doubles titles: No. 1 flight (1985), No. 2 (1984), and No. 3 (1983).
The Mechanicsburg, Pa., native contributed to Millersville’s 1985 PSAC team tennis crown and to a 79-31 Marauder dual match record over his four-year career. The Black & Gold also finished as conference runners-up twice and placed third once. His coach, Dr. William Kahler, estimated that Stoner won between 80 and 90 singles matches during his varsity career.
In ECAC Divisions II/III tournament singles competition, Stoner earned the No. 1 flight title in the fall of 1985 and the No. 2 flight championship the previous year.
After graduating with a bachelor's of arts degree in economics, Stoner competed on the United States Tennis Association (USTA) satellite professional tour, where he earned ATP world rankings in singles and doubles. He as selected as the Middle States Men’s Open Player of the Year by the U.S. Professional Tennis Association in 1990 and 1991.
Stoner earned USTA Men’s 30's division ratings in singles (1997) and doubles (1996, paired with former MU All-American Young Min Kwon). He also competed with the World Team Tennis champion New Jersey Stars squad in 1994 which featured the legendary Martina Navratilova, and was a member of the USTA International Italia Cup teams which competed in England and Germany. He has captured 11 national titles, including the 1998 and 1999 USTA Men’s 30's Hard Court Singles crowns.
In 2001, Stoner was ranked sixth in singles in the USTA Men’s 35’s division.
Today, Stoner resides in Cave Creek, Arizona, and is the proprietor of the Andrew Stoner Tennis Training academy in Scottsdale, where he has coached top junior players and worked with ATP and WTA touring professionals.
