NCAA Atlantic Regional: Mercyhurst 7, Winston-Salem State 2

Lancaster, Pa. – Mercyhurst senior Nick Gillung struck out 14 hitters in seven solid innings of work to propel the top-seeded Lakers to a 7-2 victory over CIAA champion Winston-Salem State in the first game of the 2011 NCAA Atlantic Regional Baseball tournament held from Clipper Magazine Stadium.

Gillung did not allow hit through the first five innings and finished his outing by scattering just three hits and two unearned runs.

Mercyhurst shortstop Jonathan Keppler went 3-for-3 with two runs scored. He also drew a walk to tie single-season PSAC record for walks originally set in 1977. Keppler has now walked 50 times this season.

The bottom of the sixth was the decisive frame. Clutching a 2-1 lead, the Lakers added three runs to build an extended advantage. An RBI-single by Zak Blair and a two-run double by Ethan Santora were the clutch hits in the inning.

Winston-Salem State will now play at 11 a.m. tomorrow. Mercyhurst will now play at 6 p.m.
