Monitoring Academic Progress
Progress Reports
Twice per semester, faculty members are asked to complete progress reports for selected student-athletes. Progress reports are sent out for all freshmen and returning student-athletes who are required to attend structured study.
The purpose for the progress reports are to solicit feedback directly from instructors regarding: class attendance, participation, assignment completion, and current grade in the course. The academic information collected from progress reports are used to identify student-athletes who may be struggling in classroom. Once these students are identified, the Department of Athletics, in conjunction with other campus Academic Support Services, works to provide academic support services to assist student-athletes improve academically.
Academic Meetings
Periodically throughout each semester, all freshmen and returning student-athletes who are in structured study are required to meet with their head coach or a member of the coaching staff for their individual “academic checks.” During these sessions, coaches follow-up with their student-athletes regarding their grades, go over their class notes, help the student with organizational skills (if necessary), and discuss the need for tutorial assistance or other interventions. Each month the coaches meet individually with the Associate Director of Athletics in order to discuss any issues that may have come up in their academic meetings. In addition to these meetings, any student athlete deemed to be academically “at-risk” by NCAA or institutional standards are required to meet with the Associate Director of Athletics on a bi-weekly basis as an additional intervention.
Final Grade Reports
At the conclusion of each term, grade reports are distributed to each head coach. The reports provide coaches with information regarding the student-athlete’s semester GPA, cumulative GPA, semester hours attempted, semester hours earned, as well as pertinent eligibility information.
