Terry Gunder Doogan '71 is one of eight inductees for the 2026 Millersville Athletics Hall of Fame class. Terry Gunder Doogan was a trailblazer at Millersville, bridging eras of collegiate women’s basketball and paved the way to the future with her prodigious scoring abilities and defensive excellence. As the sport transitioned from six players to five playing full court, Gunder Doogan established scoring records that would stand for generations. Her 17.1 points per game scoring average still ranks second in Millersville history, and she totaled 938 points despite playing without a 3-point shot and in just two seasons of five-player basketball.
Coach and longtime Millersville women’s director of athletics Marge Trout called Gunder Doogan, a two-time team captain, the best all-around player she ever coached. She was dubbed by Trout as the team’s leading player maker and spiritual leader, impressing with her long-range shooting, ball-handling and range at the top of Trout’s vaunted 1-2-2 press.
Modern rules were instituted prior to her junior season of 1969-70, and that suited her game perfectly. She led the team by scoring 233 points in 13 games, totaling a season-high 32 against Albright. She routinely scored double figures and helped in a win over Delaware, Gunder Doogan scored 19 points and contributed to 13 team steals as the lynchpin of the press. She earned the team’s MVP award at season’s end after leading the Marauders to an impressive 12-1 record.
Gunder Doogan rewrote the record books and led the Marauders to unprecedented success as a senior in 1970-71. Team MVP for a second time, Gunder Goodan led Millersville women’s basketball to the AIAW Regional Tournament—its first postseason appearance. That tournament is where Gunder Doogan solidified her legacy, scoring 110 points, including 48 against Rowan, establishing a PSAC single-game scoring record that stood for 52 years. Gunder Doogan led her team to a 43-12 record in four seasons.
Gunder Doogan graduated with a bachelor’s degree in elementary education. She shared her gift for the game with her family. Her daughter, Chrissie, was inducted into the La Salle Hall of Fame as a basketball player and served as a successful coach at the collegiate and high school levels. Gunder Doogan’s granddaughter, Maggie Doogan, was a two-time Atlantic-10 Player of the Year for Richmond, scoring more than 2,000 career points and is playing professional basketball in Spain.
