Millersville drops overtime thriller to No. 2 Kutztown

KUTZTOWN, Pa. — Millersville field hockey (3-3) took undefeated No. 2 Kutztown (7-0) to overtime in a rainy contest Wednesday night at Andre Reed Stadium on the campus of Kutztown University.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Marauders kept the game scoreless for a total of 53 minutes in one of their strongest defensive performances of the season so far. Kutztown entered the game averaging 7.8 goals per game through six contests. Neither offense gained momentum through three quarters of play, with nine total shots taken between both teams.

The Golden Bears applied pressure in the fourth quarter with six total shots, but only two found their way to the net. Addy Arkhurst played a strong second half for the Marauders with five saves. Kutztown eventually broke through the Marauders' defense and took its first lead of the game with just over six minutes remaining in the fourth quarter. Millersville trailed 1-0, and when they needed it most, the power duo of Emma Ruley and Alexis Kern struck to tie the game for the Marauders.

Kern sliced through the Golden Bears' defense and crossed the ball to Ruley, who was positioned perfectly on the back post to tap in the tying goal and force overtime.

The Golden Bears came out strong in an overtime period that lasted just three minutes and 36 seconds. After their third shot on goal, they broke through and scored the game winner off a cross play from the baseline.

POST-GAME WITH SHELLY BEHRENS
  • What does it mean for your team to have gone down with little time left and then force this Kutztown team to overtime?
    • " I thought it was a heck of a game both teams. I think we bring out the best in each other - I am super proud of the Millersville players and how hard they fought tonight and how well they played together. I think to be down a goal in the fourth and get one back shows us who we are and can be!"
  • Your defense continues to be a strong point of this team. While allowing 15 corners you only allowed one goal in regulation. What aspects of this defense are you most happy about?
    • "Personally I think our team defense started out slow and improved as we went…corner team defense was good tonight for sure- I thought Sarah and Addy were good in the net! Overall- we are disappointed in the result, but the performance was positive and we will learn and get better!"
Millersville stays on the road in their next game where this Saturday where they will play their first PSAC conference game against Slippery Rock University at 12 p.m.
