Millersville men's soccer splits with Georgian Court

LAKEWOOD TOWNSHIP, N.J. - Millersville splits on the road against Georgian Court, 1-1.

The Marauders made their presence well known in the first half. Despite the rain playing a factor in the matchup, Millersville continued to apply early pressure. Brian O'Neill opened the scoring by netting his first collegiate goal at the 7 minute mark. O'Neill found the lower left corner off a header pass from Travis Hemphill, who was credited with the assist.

Millersville maintained the pressure in the following minutes, as O'Neill placed another shot on goal that was saved. Zander Leik also added his name to the list of shot takers with an attempt that was stopped by the Lions' goalkeeper. Georgian Court responded later in the half with a shot on goal, but it was saved by redshirt freshman Gavin Massimi. The first half concluded with Millersville on top, 1–0.

The Lions came out strong after the weather delay by putting a shot on goal, but Massimi was able to prevent it from scoring. Following that attempt, the match remained relatively quiet for most of the second half. With two minutes remaining, Georgian Court scored to tie the match at 1–1. Millersville was unable to respond, and the game concluded in a draw. Millersville will return to action on Saturday to face Lake Haven at Pucillo Field, with kickoff scheduled for 2 p.m.

THOUGHTS FROM HEAD COACH STEVE WIDDOWSON
  • How do you feel the defenese handled the pressure late in the match before that equalizer? "I think defensively we were doing fine. It was our game management that was lacking. We gave away possession too easily, made some bad decisions and gave away too many free kicks. That kept us under pressure so we need to control the game better and reduce that pressure in future similar situations."
  • What positives can you take away from the team's overall performance? "I think overall our performance was much improved and we should have got a better result. We need to use this as a platform to keep moving forward and learning. We adjusted a few things going into today and they worked, so we need to stick to those ideas and apply them more consistently."
