MILLERSVILLE, Pa. — The Millersville Marauders hosted the Mansfield Mountaineers for a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference doubleheader and emerged with a 1-1 record after winning game one 7–3 and falling 6–3 in game two. The 'Ville worked six walks and had 14 base runners in the victory but couldn't get the bats going in game two.
Jocelyn Langer was the poster child for that patient effort in game one, getting on base four times with three free passes. Her second walk led off the Marauders' third inning four-run rally that ended up being the difference. Two defensive miscues and a
Hailey Watlington walk loaded the bases for
Angelina Edwards. As she has for much of the season, the Marauder backstop came through with a bases-clearing double to put them up 4–0. Those were her 35
th, 36
th and 37
th RBIs, good for tops in the PSAC (second place has just 27).
Nicolina Pezzone tossed three shutout frames before allowing a two-run home run in the fourth. She was relieved by
Delaney Troxell, who went the rest of the way and allowed the one run.
Millersville had one more in the nightcap than in game one (seven and six), but missed opportunities led to 10 runners left on base. That squandered an excellent outing from
Angelina Saverase in relief; the senior came in with runners on in the second inning and escaped from that jam before tossing five more frames and allowing one earned run.
"This is a young team that's seeing PSAC play for the first time and there are moments where they are adjusting and competing at a high level," Millersville head coach
Jen Probst said postgame. "Moving forward I'm hoping to see more consistent approaches at the plate and in the circle. Even so, they are so competitive and are never out of it even down to the last out."
Utility-woman
Carly Vaughan added two more hit by pitches to her league-leading total; she's tops in the PSAC with 10 while second place has just four. With the win in game one, Pezzone moves into a tie for second in the conference with nine victories. Langer got on base in both games, extending her on-base streak to 24 games dating back to Feb. 26 against Chestnut Hill.
The Marauders are back in action on March 25 at Shippensburg. Game one is scheduled for 1 p.m. while game two will follow at 3.
