MILLERSVILLE, Pa. - Shepherd spoiled Millersville's Senior Day Saturday, shooting 72% from the field in the second half and never truly letting the Marauders back in the game. The Rams' 75-68 win solidified PSAC Tournament seeding, putting Shepherd in the No. 3 spot and dropping Millersville to No. 4.
The Rams (18-10, 14-7 PSAC) needed fewer than six minutes to build a double-digit lead, led by as many as 14 in the first half, and just when Millersville mounted a charge late to cut it to six, Jarod Robinson hit a dagger 3-pointer just before the halftime buzzer, squelching all of Millersville's momentum. The Marauders trailed by as many as 15 in the second half before cutting it to 60-57 on
Dante Weise's 3-pointer with just over eight minutes to play, but Shepherd scored the next four points and went on a 9-2 run to push the lead back to double digits.
"Right now, teams are struggling for three games and then play us and all of a sudden the shots that don't go in start going in," said Millersville head coach
Casey Stitzel. "I just thought we had no juice to start the game. Why I have no idea. Maybe still tied up in the West Chester game. But it's been an issue for us all year, the inconsistency, to have the mindset to win every game. We'll show flashes. If we played the first 20 like we played the last 10 minutes, it's a different game. It's just been a tough year with that, and I've got to do a better job of finding a way to get these guys to play hard all the time."
Marcus Banks led Shepherd with 19 points and Chase Paar provided 16 points and 10 rebounds. The Rams' size gave Millersville problems in both match-ups this season as they limited the Marauders' leading scorer,
Drew Stover, to eight points on 4 of 11 shooting.
Jahme Ested led Millersville with 18 points, eight rebounds and four assists.
While Millersville moved down in the PSAC Tournament seeding with the loss, it had already clinched a home playoff game on Monday. The opponent now is Lock Haven, who Millersville split with in the regular season, each team winning at home. It is a rematch of the 2023 first round when Lock Haven upset Millersville 66-57 in Pucillo Gymnasium.
"One of two things are going to happen," said Stitzel. "They can either come in feeling sorry for themselves tomorrow, and we'll have another poor effort on Monday, or they'll go look in the mirror and not back down, find a way to be ready to go."
