Extra-base hits abound in game one as softball takes two from Holy Family

BENSALEM, Pa. — It was all Millersville from start to finish as the visiting Marauders trounced the Holy Family Tigers by scores of 9–2 and 6–2 to improve to 4–2 on the season. Jocelyn Langer and Angelina Edwards put up big numbers at the plate while Nicolina Pezzone, Angelina Saverase and Mollie White shut down the Tigers' bats.

The Marauders clouted eight extra-base hits on the afternoon including six in the first game, the first of which was a Jiana Maniscalco solo homerun to take the lead in the second inning. It was the first homerun of her career and Millersville never gave the lead back, piling up 11 hits and nine runs before the game was over. Langer was 3-for-3 in that game with two runs scored and two runs batted in while Edwards and Carly Vaughan matched the freshman with two RBIs apiece.

"That's two more great team wins," Marauders head coach Jen Probst said postgame. "We did a great job of scoring runners, especially with two outs."

A group of pitchers got the job done in that first game, including White and Saverase. White got the win after tossing three scoreless innings in relief and Saverase closed the game with two more shutout frames in the sixth and seventh.

Pezzone held the Tigers offense to just two hits and a lone run while striking out seven in her five innings of work in game two. She started the game with four innings of one-run ball before being replaced by Saverase to begin the fifth. Saverase held down the fort for six outs and gave the ball back to Pezzone to close it out in the seventh, who promptly retired the side 1-2-3 for the series sweep.

Not to be lost in the shuffle was the Marauders' defense; after making 11 errors in the first doubleheader at Goldey-Beacom, they haven't made a miscue in their last three games and have had just two in four games since then. Probst was happy with her team and credited their time on the field with the change, saying, "having a bunch of practices on the dirt has helped us."

Langer finished the day with five hits and four runs scored while Maniscalco had three hits and three RBI. Edwards tallied a few timely hits en route to totaling three hits and a team-high five RBI. After sweeping Chestnut Hill on Wednesday, today's two victories make it four straight for the 'Ville.

They look to make it six when they host the Bloomfield Bears for a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m. on Monday, March 3.
