Women's soccer splits with No. 24 Shepherd

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.V. - The women's soccer program split with No. 24 Shepherd in a 1-1 draw.

Millersville set the pace early, earning both a free kick and a corner kick but failing to capitalize on either opportunity. The Marauders broke through in the 12th minute when senior Isabel Coy scored an unassisted goal to give the team a 1–0 lead.

Shepherd retaliated by putting multiple shots on senior goalkeeper Sabrina Zimmerman. The Rams recorded five shots on goal, all of which Zimmerman saved. Millersville registered only two shots in the first half, with the second attempt occurring in the 35th minute when junior forward Aubrey Strohecker missed high. The Marauders concluded the first half with a 1–0 lead.

The Marauders' defense was the key storyline of the second half. The back line of Melanie Love, Olivia Stone, and Elvira Remstam played a pivotal role in limiting the Rams' offense. Shepherd earned its first chance to tie the match following a foul in the box, which resulted in a penalty kick. Zimmerman made a crucial save to keep the one-goal advantage. However, the Rams continued to generate opportunities and eventually scored in the 68th minute to even the match at 1–1.

Millersville generated several opportunities to respond on corner kicks but was unable to convert. With 45 seconds remaining, senior Caroline Wood attempted a final shot to regain the lead but missed high. The match concluded in a 1–1 draw. With the result, the Marauders moved to 4–3–2 on the season and will return to action next Wednesday with a 2 p.m. matchup at West Chester.

THOUGHTS FROM HEAD COACH MATT PROCOPIO
  • The defense played a major role in today's score. Can you speak on the overall performance? "Defensively it was a team performance today. It all starts up front and on through the lines. Everyone played their role."
  • What would you like to see improved offensively to get more shots on goal? "Well it all starts with doing more when you have the ball. Possessions hopefully end in goals or a shot or something in the attacking third. Today we knew our chances would be limited but we do need to do more with the ball in transition. Ultimately, we cannot give the ball away so cheaply."
