Men's soccer falls to West Chester in PSAC opener, 2-1

WEST CHESTER, Pa. - The Millersville men's soccer program dropped its opening PSAC matchup to West Chester, 2-1, on Wednesday.

The Marauders generated early pressure, as Tylen Thomas and Travis Hemphill each recorded shot attempts that went off target. Both teams earned several free kicks in the opening minutes. West Chester capitalized first, scoring just under nine minutes into the match off a cross into the box that resulted in an open shot on net.

Millersville responded quickly. Zander Leik found Brian O'Neill in transition, who struck a shot into the top-right corner to even the score, 1-1. Goalkeeper Gavin Massimi made his lone save of the contest later in the half, stopping a low shot to the left corner. The remainder of the first half was evenly contested, sending the teams into halftime tied.

The Golden Rams came out aggressively in the second half, though their early shot attempts were off target. Millersville answered with a header from Kehmar Green off a free kick, but West Chester's goalkeeper secured the save. The Marauders continued to generate chances, though many were blocked or saved.

West Chester regained the lead with 15 minutes remaining after Massimi mishandled the ball in the box, allowing the Golden Rams to capitalize and score. Roy Parkyn attempted to equalize with a late shot, but was denied.

The Marauders were unable to find the tying goal, ultimately falling 2-1. Millersville returns to action on Saturday with a road contest at Shippensburg, beginning at 4:30 p.m.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE

  • Hemphill had four shots with two being on goal
  • Millersville outshot West Chester 13-8
THOUGHTS FROM HEAD COACH STEVE WIDDOWSON
  • What are your thoughts on the boys battling back, after giving up an early goal? "I thought we responded well after the early set back and battled well throughout the game. We gained more control as the game went on, but didn't quite do enough with that control to convert it into regular scoring chances, which left us short in the end."
  • What can the team learn from the free kick that ultimately gave West Chester the second goal? "It really wasn't down to the free kick. It was an individual error and another case of us giving away a cheap goal and a result unnecessarily. We have done this too often this season and need to stop the trend if we want to achieve our goals. It all comes down to individual execution in moments, both in the attack and defensive."
