Marauders struggle to execute in loss against Ashland

MILLERSVILLE, Pa. - The Millersville Marauders came out with tremendous energy and attack, in the home opener against the Ashland Eagles, but ultimately fell short 1-0 after several unlucky deflections and offside calls while on offense.

The match between the Eagles and Marauders was intense from the start, as both teams battled to maintain possession on the offensive attack. It was in the 13th minute of play that Ashland forward Sirlem Tullah gave the Eagles a 1-0 advantage with a precise finish off a corner kick.

Millersville took to the attack, taking four shots on goal in the first half and an additional five in the second but was unable to find the back of the net. Ashland goalkeeper Ty Boweden denied the Marauders of any offensive success, tallying four saves on the day.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE

  •  Matias Shcmidt, Tylen Thomas, Roy Parkyn, and Louis Wright collectively totaled for nine shots on the day.
  • Millersville created offensive opportunities today, earning five corners and two free kicks just outside the 18-yard box.
  • The Marauder defense remained solid, allowing just the one shot on goal.

GAME NOTES

  • The series between these two programs moves to 1-1-1.
  • This is Marauders' first loss, during a home opener, since their defeat to Mercy on Sep. 14, 2019.

POSTGAME REACTION FROM STEVE WIDDOWSON

  • Overall thoughts on today's match: "It was certainly a frustrating day today. I think we did enough to get a result, but overall lacked the sharpness in the final third that we needed. The keeper made some good saves and we hit the crossbar but we could have had so many more chances with some better decisions and better quality. However, it's all part of the learning process so now we have to see how we react."
  • On the utilization of the bench: "Currently we have a lot of options and we are trying to give everyone opportunities. Then we will see who takes advantage of those opportunities and separates themselves. At this point in the year we want to share workloads and provide experience to as many players as we can. We had good contributions from everyone today and these numbers should help us as we have to deal with injuries etc later on."
