Marauders claim victory over undefeated Warriors

MILLERSVILLE, Pa. — The Millersville men's soccer team defended their home turf, beating the previously undefeated East Stroudsburg Warriors, 1-0.

Millersville won its second consecutive game and this one came on Alumni Day in front of Marauders from the past. It was the Marauders' second shutout of the season and moved them to 2-0 in PSAC East play.

The duo of Matias Schmidt and Tylen Thomas gave the Marauders a 1-0 edge over the Warriors midway through the first half. The two freshmen had just entered the match and within minutes made an impact. Thomas corralled the ball in the corner, placed a low cross through the box finding the foot of Schmidt who then placed the ball in the lower left corner of the net, just past the diving ESU goalkeeper.

Through the first six games, Millersville head coach Steve Widdowson has utilized a deep roster, and the bench played a key role again on Saturday.

"Our bench has been great all year, although we don't refer to them as that," said Widdowson. "They are our bomb squad and their impact is great. They have so much value, and that's why we don't call them bench players. "[The players coming off the bench] are a key part of our team and provide tremendous value as was demonstrated again today."

With the Marauders holding a one-goal lead, intensity grew into the second half. Physicality increased and emotions showed on both sides of the ball. The Warriors did not back down in this battle, taking 14 shots including five on goal, but the tremendous Marauder defense, led by goalkeeper Jake Van Vorhees, kept ESU off the board. Van Vorhees had a handful of stellar saves, keeping the momentum in the Marauders' hands.

The Marauders now have a few days to prepare before the head back on the road to West Chester to face the Golden Rams on Wednesday, Oct. 2 at 3:00 p.m.

POSTGAME REACTION FROM HEAD COACH STEVE WIDDOWSON
  • On the match-up with ESU: "I thought we got away with one a little bit today. We did well and showed fantastic heart, determination and effort but we lacked game control in the second half and gave ourselves a lot of problems that thankfully we dealt with. ESU was very strong, and overall it was a really good PSAC battle."
  • On the impact of playing at Pucillo Field: "It's always great playing at home. The fans were great today, and we had a lot of alumni there as well. We even had Randy Bauer from the original 1960 team there today and Ed Goodhart who played on those first 'Ville teams as well. We could not be prouder to have given them the result and battling performance today as we continue their legacy."
