MILLERSVILLE, Pa. - After two consecutive scoreless outings, the Millersville men's soccer team finally found the offensive finish they have been searching for, beating Shippensburg 3-0 for a win in the PSAC East opener.
Millersville (2-2-0, 1-0-0) entered Wednesday's match on the heels of back-to-back 1-0 losses, but the Marauders piled up 22 shots and received goals from
Zander Leik,
Matias Schmidt and
Haven Thomas to get back into the win column.
"It was a hugely important result," said Millersville head coach
Steve Widdowson. "Obviously because it's in conference and the first game, a win is always important. However, after our last two performances, this was even more important to build confidence and restore belief."
In the 28th minute of play,
Braeden Brownholtz sent a precise pass through the Shippensburg defense, putting Leik on a breakaway. Leik finished with a line drive past the hands of Shippensburg goalkeeper Ryan Krumenacker putting the Marauders ahead, 1-0.
Millersville held on to a narrow 1-0 lead until Schmidt added the insurance marker for the Marauders in the 79th minute.
Teague Ferry found Schmidt just outside the 18-yard box and Schmidt placed a line-drive to the lower right side of the net. Then, with just 90 seconds remaining,
Haven Thomas sealed the deal for the Marauders, finishing the play after a deflection off the foot of
Michael Dempsey.
After struggling in their previous two matches, it was a priority for the Marauders to find an offensive again. Eleven different Marauders participated in the action. Dempsey,
Richy Valverde, and
Teague Ferry found themselves with breakaway opportunities and were just inches away from breaking open the score even more.
"We know we have plenty of guys that can score," said Widdowson. "It's important they realize that and have confidence in themselves. We won't ever rely on one guy so it's great to see goals going in from different players and in different ways. We need to continue that, and I think we actually could have been more ruthless and clinical tonight. But at least we created a lot of opportunity."
The win continued the Marauders' home winning streak over the Marauders that dates back to 2006.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Jake Van Vorhees picked up his first collegiate shutout, facing just two shots on goal.

MORE FROM COACH WIDDOWSON
- "The most important thing is for us to remember are the factors that led to our success but also to not get ahead of ourselves. There were plenty of things we can do better, but we also discussed the formula that can lead to success. We have to remind ourselves daily what that formula is and stick to it."
