Second half-frenzy leaves women’s soccer with a draw

MANSFIELD, Pa. - Playing the full 90 minutes was key, as Millersville women's soccer settled for a 3-3 draw against PSAC East opponent, Mansfield.

For the third consecutive game, Millersville scored the first goal to take the early lead. In the 13th minute, Isabel Coy dribbled and crossed the ball from Mansfield's end line. Aalivia Wainwright's one-touch shot bounced off the crossbar, but Aubrey Strohecker was there to redirect the ball into the net, giving Millersville the 1-0 lead.

The Marauders, not looking to concede in the first half, limited the Mountaineers to two shots. With open space, Wainwright played herself into the box but was tripped by the Mountaineer defender. A penalty kick was awarded, and Madelyn Zielke converted the opportunity, scoring goal number two.

Coy, getting into the mix again, serviced the ball into the box and took a fortunate bounce off a Mountaineer defender, resulting in another goal and pushing the Marauders to a 3-0 lead.

The Mountaineers began their comeback in the 71st minute. Off a shot, Emily Smith followed the rebound to tap in goal number one. Four minutes later, the ball was loose in the Marauder box, and Katelyn Rueppel crashed the net to cut the deficit to 3-2.

Following an offside call against the Marauders, the Mountaineers booted their free kick up the field. Rueppel ran onto the ball and floated it over the keepers' head to score the equalizer in the 87th minute, making it 3-3.

With limited time on the clock, neither team could find the back of the net once more as they both picked up their first tie of the season.

The Marauders stay on the road as they will travel to West Chest on Wednesday, Sept. 18 to kick off at 2 p.m.
