ABOUT THE GAMES

  • The Millersville softball team hosts the Mansfield Mountaineers for a doubleheader at Seaber Softball Stadium beginning at 1 p.m. on March 22.  The teams were originally scheduled to play this twin bill in Mansfield, but with inclement weather projected for the Mansfield area, the games were moved to Millersville. The April 12 doubleheader originally scheduled to be played in Millersville will now be played in Mansfield.

SCOUTING THE MARAUDERS

  • The Marauders have had an up and down past few weeks on the diamond and return home for the first time in over a month. Their last home date was February 21 against Bloomfield. They started the road trip by losing seven of eight games against some tough competition but have bounced back of late by winning five of their last seven. The team is also coming off of two rollercoaster doubleheaders against Jefferson and West Chester that both resulted in splits.
  • The offense has been generated mostly by their top two hitters over the past few weeks: Aleese Angelo and Gabi Turner. Angelo has been in a league of her own this season and leads the PSAC in OPS (1.640) , slugging percentage (1.052), home runs (8) and total bases (61). She's second in the conference in batting average (.517), on base percentage (.588) and runs batted in (25) as well. On Tuesday against West Chester, Angelo went five for eight with a triple, a home run, two runs batted in and four runs scored. The senior has eight round-trippers compared to just six strikeouts in 2024
  • After starting the season slow, Turner has come on strong of late. Until a hitless performance in game two against the Golden Rams, she was working on a 12 game hitting streak dating back to March 3 against Limestone. The first baseman has hit four home runs in her last seven games and is tied for third in the PSAC for the season with six total. Not only have they come in bunches, but they have been timely as well; each of her last four homers have been go-ahead or game-tying shots. She put the Marauders in front in the top of the seventh in game one against West Chester with a three-run blast and the team has a record of 5-1 when she goes yard.

SCOUTING THE MOUNTAINEERS

  • The Mountaineers are led by head coach Edith Gallagher, who enters her thirty-third year at the helm. She's most likely going to get her five hundredth career victory in the coming weeks. Right now, Gallagher sits four away with 496 career wins. The hot start has been a bit surprising, as the Mounties finished with a 10-34 record in 2023 but brought back a lot of experience for 2024.
  • They have only played 10 games due to the spring weather but are 9-1 in those games and lead the PSAC in hitting with a .390 team average. A large part of that is the batsmanship of junior Melissa Demo, who is the only person in the PSAC with a higher average and on base percentage than Aleese Angelo. She's tops in both categories with a .615 average and a .615 on base percentage. Demo has been the definition of a contact hitter, as 23 of her 24 hits have been singles and she's only struck out once. On the flip side, she's yet to draw a walk. She's got a hit in every game but has been even more productive of late, hitting .750 over her last six games.
  • The rest of the team has been raking as well. None of the eight qualifying hitters on Mansfield have a batting average south of the .300 mark. Seniors Kayla Vonstein and Fallon Kelly both possess OPS's greater than 1.000. Kelly is hitting .469 so far and ranks fifth in the league in that category while Vonstein is tied for second in the league in triples with three in just 10 games played.
  • They also lead the league in pitching, with a 1.35 team earned run average. The Marauders will most likely face the pair of Annabella Putnam and Danielle Goff to start both games, as they've combined to hurl 59 of the 62 innings Mansfield has played thus far. Look for both to go the distance, as Putnam has tossed four complete games in her five starts and Goff has three in five starts. The pair is fifth and sixth in earned run average in the PSAC; Putnam's is 1.40 while Goff's is 1.45.
