MILLERSVILLE, Pa.. - Sixth-ranked Millersville topped No. 22 Goldey-Beacom 7-2 in Friday's home opener, receiving six strong innings from
Carson Kulina. But the Lightning got its own stellar pitching performance in game two from Justin Jump to split the doubleheader with an 8-2 win.
Millersville is now 8-3 with all three of its losses coming against nationally ranked opponents. Goldey-Beacom's record moved to 7-3 with the split.
Millersville turned in a pair of uneven performances in its first home games of 2024. In game one, the Marauders manufactured seven runs on seven hits and five walks, swiping five bases, and play error-free defense. Kulina pitched a season-high six innings, allowing just one run on four hits while striking out seven. In game two, five Millersville pitchers issued 11 walks, and the defense committed three errors, all of which led to Goldey-Beacom runs. Jump quieted the Marauder bats, taking a no-hitter into the fifth.
GAME ONE
- Kulina improved to 2-0 with his stellar start, matching a season-high in strikeouts. His offense provided early run support with three runs on one hit in the first two innings. The Marauders broke open the game in the third with three more runs. Keegan Solits and Jimmy Kirk led off with back-to-back singles. Taso Kovack's sacrifice bunt turned into a throwing error, allowing Soltis to score. John Seibert brought home Jimmy Kirk with a sac fly, and Jeff Sabater's single pushed the lead to 6-1. Matthew Williams scored on a wild pitch in the fourth to push the lead to 7-1.
- Sabater reached base three times and stole three bases. Williams recorded a single, double and two walks.
GAME TWO
- A Mark McNelly walk in the first and a hit batsman in the fourth were the only runners MIllersville could muster against Jump through the first four innings. Jump entered the game with 11 consecutive shutout innings and extended that streak to 16 1/3 before McNelly drove in Sabater with a single in the sixth. Jimmy Kirk broke up the no-hitter bid with a leadoff single in the fifth.
- Goldey-Beacom scored at least one run in each of the first five innings, and much of the trouble for Millersville was self-inflicted. Starter Colby Gromlich walked three in the first, and a throwing error led to a run in the second. A hit batter and walk followed by a field error brought in two more in the third. In the fifth, a walk and throwing error led to two more runs.
- McNelly reached base two more times in the nightcap with a hit and walk.
