Marauders clinch No. 2 seed with rout of top-seeded Huskies

MILLERSVILLE, Pa. - Senior Night proved extra-special for the Millersville men's soccer team as Danny Gartner set off a Marauders' onslaught, helping his team to a 3-0 win over PSAC East-leading Bloomsburg, clinching a home match for Monday's PSAC Quarterfinal.

Roy Parkyn added a goal and assist, and Louis Wright added an insurance goal. Richy Valverded capped his Senior Night with an assist. Cooper Davis assisted on Gartner's game-winner. Goalkeeper Jake Van Vorhees recorded five saves for his seven shutout of the season.

Bloomsburg controlled the match early, out-shooting Millersville 6-1 in the first 45, but Millersville turned the tide late in the half starting with Gartner's strike in the 41st minute. That set off a run of three Millersville goals in 16 minutes. Millersville poured it on in the second half. Valverde assisted Parkyn in the 55th minute, and Wright followed off a Parkyn assist just over two minutes later.

Van Vorhees and the Marauders held up the rest of the way, denying the Huskies on five second-half shots.

The win assured Millersville of a home game against West Chester Monday at 6 p.m. in the PSAC Quarterfinals. Millersville is now 6-1 at home this season, and the win avenged a 2-1 loss against the Huskies from earlier in the season.

POSTGAME REACTION FROM COACH STEVE WIDDOWSON:

On the match overall:
"I thought it was very good game tonight and a great overall performance. We didn't quite click in the first half with our possession but I thought that was much better in the second half. We defended well throughout the game and stuck to our game plan and put in a great team performance."
On the senior class and the impact they have had: "It was a really great night for our seniors tonight. They all contributed and it was especially awesome for Danny Gartner to get a goal. The rest of the team also did a great job of honoring our seniors with the performance they put in."
On preperation for the playoffs: "Right now the focus is on recovery. We will then prepare mentally for West Chester and get our game plans established and then it's just down to showing up on Monday and giving everything we can to keep the season going."
