MILLERSVILLE, Pa. - Millersville wrestling hosted over 300 participants at this year's "Shorty" Hitchcock Memorial Classic, featuring talent ranging from Division I athletes to high school wrestlers.
The Marauders were led by Bruce Vaughan who went 3-1 and Dom Flatt who capped off the open 3-2 record.
In the 197-pound bracket, Vaughan scored a gritty decision win followed by a fall and technical fall. In his fourth bout of the day, the redshirt senior was defeated by Dan Rella Jr. from Drexel.
Flatt lost his first bout of the day but rebounded in the consolation matches. He recorded three straight wins. He pinned Gabriel Ruggieri from Pitt-Johnstown at the end of the first period, followed by two decision victories. His win streak came to a halt when Ejiro Montoya from Franklin and Marshall won by technical fall.
Bryce Beatty (125), Aidan Micheli (141), Marcus Gable (149), Matt Morris (149), and Bishop McCoy (285) all recorded two wins at the open.
Beatty had a hot start with a dominant 16-1 technical fall win in his first match over Elijah Clark from Camden County College. He followed this performance with a pin in 2:05 against Carson Citro from Sussex County. The senior lost by decision in his last two matches of the day to finish 2-2.
Micheli, who placed fourth in the Classic last year, finished the open 2-2. Micheli dropped a hard-fought opening match to Trevor Nugent 9-3 but rallied back in the consolation matches to earn one bonus point win and a decision win. The sophomore ended 2-2 in the 141-pound weight class.
Competing in the 149-pound bracket, both Gable and Morris both tallied a 2-2 record on the open. Gable's notable performance was a 15-0 technical fall win over Thomas Von Eschenbach from USMAPS/Army Prep. Morris had a stellar performance over Austin Noe from East Stroudsburg pinning him in 0:57 seconds.
McCoy rallied for a 2-2 record at the "Shorty" with a pair of pins. The fastest fall clocked in at 1:00 over Kurt Scheuerman. The heavyweight now leads the Marauders this season with five pins on the season.
Millersville collectively recorded 14 bonus point wins. The Marauders will have a couple of weeks off as their next match-up will start conference contention against East Stroudsburg on Wednesday, Dec. 4 at 7 p.m. in Pucillo Gymnasium.
