MANSFIELD, Pa. — The Millersville field hockey team's final game of the 2024 season required extra time after 60 scoreless minutes, and
Emma Ruley scored the game-winning goal to give the Marauders the 1–0 win.
Both teams traded possession in the first quarter, each getting one chance at a goal but neither converting. The Marauders got the first penalty corner of the game, but the Mountaineers defended well and cleared the ball. Shortly after, Jenna Duke put the first shot on goal for the game, and Koons came out and made the stop before another shot went wide as the quarter wound down.
Millersville was aggressive to start the second, earning a corner in the first 15 seconds of the frame. Ruley and
Gianna Cugino had good looks at the net, but Mansfield's August Lewis stopped both to keep the game tied. Millersville had another chance a couple of minutes later off a corner again, but
Caitlin Wassermann's shot was blocked. Mansfield was able to flip the field after that last chance and create some chances of their own. The Mountaineers had a shot off a corner that Koons stopped and ended the first half with one last scoring opportunity. Kenedy Stroup took a shot and Koons made a save with under a minute to go, and Millersville was able to neutralize a Mansfield penalty corner to go into halftime still even.
The Marauders again had an early chance to start a quarter, this time coming from
Paige Webster. Webster had a look a minute and a half into the third quarter, but Lewis made the stop for the Mountaineers. Play settled down afterward, though Mansfield made a strong push near the midway mark of the frame. The Mountaineers earned two corners, forcing Koons to make two great saves off the second one to keep the game tied entering the fourth quarter.
In one of the stronger offensive quarters for the Marauders, Millersville put continuous pressure on the Mountaineer defense. After a shot by
Daniella Fazekas was saved, the Marauders did not let up. Two more shots from Webster and
Saige Shine were put on target, and Lewis came up with two more saves. Millersville earned a penalty corner off Shine's shot, which led to a look for Wassermann that was saved, and one from
Morgan Lennon that went wide.
Erin Esterhuizen had the last look for Millersville in regulation that Lewis stopped as well, keeping Mansfield in it and forcing overtime.
After being under siege for most of the fourth quarter, Mansfield flipped the field in overtime. The Mountaineers had the first six shot attempts of the extra period, including a two-on-one opportunity. Mansfield moved the ball up field with only Wassermann back defensively, who took away the pass before applying pressure and forcing an off-target shot. With a little over three minutes remaining, the Mountaineers had possession in their own end off a Millersville foul. They tried an aerial pass over the middle of the field, but
Caroline Griffin knocked it down to Ruley. Ruley was able to weave around defenders and get a solo opportunity against the goalie, with her initial shot getting saved, but the rebound went off a defender and right back to Ruley with a wide-open net to win the game.
The Marauders finish the 2024 season with an 8–9 record overall and went 3–6 against PSAC opponents.

POSTGAME REACTION FROM HEAD COACH SHELLY BEHRENS
- Overall thoughts on the game: "I'm really proud of how the kids fought all game long, played well, and did a good job. It's a good win on the road, and it's good to win in overtime."
- On the fourth quarter push: "It's what we've done all along. We stayed with it and eventually found the back of the net. Kerstin kept us in the game, as she always does, and I think the kids really fought hard and played with so much heart. We know we can take this result somewhere. We're really proud of what our seniors have left us with. It wasn't the ending they wanted, but I think it was a great step for 2025.
- On ending the season with a win: "At the end of the day, they did what they've been able to do all along. They stayed together, they reminded themselves of a few things. I think sometimes they want to win so badly that they forget how to play the game, because all you want to do is win the game. Today, they were really good, they covered for each other, and they played the game. Mansfield is a good opponent and really tough at home. If anything, we just continued to believe in ourselves."
