Millersville, Pa. – The Millersville women's soccer team is set to open its season at Goldey-Beacom on Saturday, Sept. 2, and is hoping to reestablish themselves as a PSAC contender.
The Marauders finished eighth in the PSAC in 2022 with an overall record of 3-8-6. The Marauders were ranked No. 5 in the East in the 2023 preseason poll. Last season was an aberration in Matt Procopio's tenure, as the Marauders had finished as a PSAC runner-up one year prior and had reached the NCAA Tournament the two seasons before that.
Procopio and the team are not dwelling on past results but building upon the foundation and expectations they have for this upcoming season. The ranking this year is motivation to excel and come out with a gritty mindset from the get-go.
"All we can do is improve upon last year," Procopio said. "We can do this by focusing on one game at a time, learning from our mistakes, and growing as a unit."
'Ville has 17 returning players and Procopio equipped the team with 11 new members. With multiple veteran players returning, they can teach the new talent the culture of the team. Someone who the newcomers can look up to is Kylie Sullivan. Sullivan was named to the All-PSAC East Second Team and returned this year for her fifth year.
To generate good synergy within the team, a leadership council was created. The council members are Sullivan, Bailey Hunt, Taylor Whitmer, Isabella Fiorenza, Isabel Coy, and Kyleigh Straub. The purpose of this council is to have member from each class get together and converse as to what is happening on and off the field. It is also a bonding tool that helps the players mesh when they are performing on the field.
"Overall, this preseason was smooth sailing" Procopio said. "From the practice point of view, the objective here was to have the team focus on themselves and as a unit. There were a lot of new moving parts throughout this process, but the team grew in a positive direction."
The Marauders played two scrimmages this preseason. The matches were against York College and Jefferson, and the Marauders were victorious in both contests. The outcomes reflect how the team has come together in such a short amount of time. As they enter regular season play, they want to continue to focus on themselves and their style of play.
"Every game is a challenge within itself" Procopio said. "It doesn't matter who you play, what matters if you come out with the mentality that you are going to dominate the game."
The Marauders 2023 schedule consists of 17 games, only one oof which is a non-conference game. 'Ville's season begins with a road trip to Goldey-Beacom. The last time the two teams played was in 2009 with Millersville prevailing, 5-0. Millersville opens PSAC East play at home on Saturday, Sept. 9 against Mansfield.
