Marauders get past Kutztown for fifth-straight win

KUTZTOWN, Pa. - Despite playing down a player, the Millersville men's tennis team beat Kutztown 4-3 for its fifth-straight win, staying unbeaten in PSAC play.

The Marauders evened their record to 6-6 and improved to 4-0 in PSAC action, keeping pace with Edinboro for first place in the standings with two matches to play. Millersville also clinched a PSAC Tournament berth for the third season in a row.

HOW IT HAPPENED
•  After dropping the doubles point and with a forfeit at No. 6 singles, Millersville started singles play down, 2-0. But the Marauders received convincing wins from No. 1 Dylan Tull (6-4, 6-0), No. 3 Zach Pernia (7-5, 6-1) and No. 5 Jasper de Koning (6-2, 6-0) which set up Lino Morin's gutsy three-set win at No. 4 singles. Morin won the first set 6-3 but dropped the second in a tiebreaker, 7-6 (8-6). Morin rebounded and clinched the match for Millersville with a 6-4 win in the third.
• Tull, Pernia and de Koning all improved to 4-0 against PSAC competition. Tull and Pernia also ran their doubles record to 5-0.

POSTMATCH REACTION FROM COACH MATT HELSEL
• "Winning tennis matches is hard enough, but winning with five players is nearly impossible. We've faced so many obstacles this season that it doesn't even faze us anymore. We won the last three matches of the day to seal it, and it couldn't be more fitting than how it ended, with Lino and Jasper winning in singles despite losing in doubles earlier. I can't say enough for Lino. What he's played through and how much he's fought despite adversity. He's been an inspiration. All of the guys have been incredible this season. They just show up and play. Even at practice, with our injuries, we may only have a couple guys available. Whether it's practice or a match, however is able to, they play and play hard."

UP NEXT
• Millersville plays for PSAC Tournament seeding with key matches against Mercyhurst (April 14) and Edinboro (April 15).
