KUTZTOWN, Pa. - Thomas Caufield paced the Marauders with a 3-for-3 performance in game one and added three more hits, including an RBI double in the 11th inning of game two as the No. 14-ranked Millersville Marauders capped a three-game series sweep of Kutztown. Millersville won the seven-inning opener by an 8-3 score, and then outlasted the Golden Bears extra innings by an 8-4 final.
At 21-4, Millersville is off to its best start through 25 games since the 2016 club opened 23-2. The Marauders have won 14 of their last 15 games overall and have allowed three runs or fewer in 10 of the last 13 games. Millersville now has 15 consecutive wins over Kutztown, sweeping the last four season series and holding Kutztown to three runs or fewer in 13 of those games.Â
GAME ONE
• Leadoff hitter
Jimmy Losh reached base four times, drawing three walks with a single, and he scored twice, drove in a run and stole two bases, setting the table for
Bren Taylor,
Sam Morris, Caufield and
John Seibert. That quintet accounted seven RBIs and seven of the team's runs scored. Taylor and Caufield both had two singles and a double. Caufield and Morris both drove in two runs.Â
• Millersville scored at least one run in each of the first four innings, rallying from an early 2-1 deficit. The big blow to Kutztown came in the fourth. With the Marauders leading 4-2, Losh led off with a single, Taylor doubled, and Morris drove in both with a double of his own. Caufield's infield single later pushed Morris home, capping a three-run inning that pushed the Marauders in front by five.Â
• Millersville was active on the base paths, stealing five bases.Â
•
Ben Wilchacky tossed 4 2/3 innings to improve to 4-1. He persevered through five hits, a walk and two hit batsmen to allow three runs.
Rece Ritchey and
Matt Seibert combined for 2 1/3 innings of shutout ball, totaling five strikeouts without a walk.Â
GAME TWO
• Kutztown was down to their final out in the eighth when Jimmy Kerley delivered a two-run double to tie the game at 3-3. Millersville then went down in order in the ninth, and Kutztown seriously threatened to end the game in the bottom of the ninth. The Golden Bears loaded the bases on a double, intentional walk and hit batsman, but
Evan Rishell escaped the jam with a strikeout. Millersville missed their own golden opportunity in the top of the 10th, loading the bases with with one out, but Kutztown's Gavin Moretski got pinch hitter
Cole Houser to ground into an inning-ending 5-2-3 double play.Â
• Millersville went scoreless for six consecutive innings, but
John Seibert started the 11th with an infield single, stole second base and then moved up to the third on a throwing error by the catcher.
Chase Simmons drove in the go-ahead run with a sacrifice fly, and three batters later, Caufield broke the game open with a run-scoring double. Millersville went on to score five runs in the inning. Kutztown did not go quietly in the bottom of the inning. Mitchell Burns drew a bases-loaded walk, and Kerley came to the plate representing the game-tying run, but reliever
Harry Prince deflected a come-backer to Losh, who fired to first base for the final out.Â
•
Alex Mykut turned in his longest outing since March 26, 2021, pitching 6 2/3 innings in a no decision. He surrendered just one unearned run while striking out six.Â
•
Matthew Williams went 2-for-5 with a walk and also drove in two runs.Â
REACTION FROM COACH JON SHEHAN
•
On Caufield's day: "Tom's at-bats have been really solid. When things are going well, his takes are aggressive. His lower half gets engaged. You could see he was starting to see the ball better against Goldey-Beacom two weeks ago. This weekend he hit like he was capable. That said, his BABIP is tough right now. He's hitting everything hard."Â
•
On closing out the win in game two: "Things weren't going our way today. The wind and the field made conditions tough today. We got a couple tough breaks. When they tied the game, we had a choice. We could have given up, or we could have competed. The score reflects the choice we made. We are tough offensively because there are literally no outs in our lineup."
