MILLERSVILLE, Pa. – Ryan Davis made sure his Senior Day celebration ended in a victory. Inserted into the starting lineup with
Day Waters out, Davis recorded 14 points, eight rebounds and four steals, sparking the Marauders to a huge second-half surge and an 83-66 win over Mansfield in Saturday's regular season finale.
The Marauders' win puts them at 18-11 overall and 15-7 in the PSAC, locking them in as the No. 4 seed and setting up a PSAC Tournament game at home on Monday night against Lock Haven. But just two days removed from the epic double-overtime game at West Chester, Millersville started slowly against Mansfield and fell behind 41-30 with a minute remaining in the first half. Millersville closed the first half on a 6-0 run and carried that momentum into the second half, outscoring Mansfield 15-2 in a three-minute span across the halves.
Davis,
Keith Mency and reserves
Drew Stover (14 points) and
Jahme Ested (10 points and four assists) played a key role in Millersville's run to the lead. Mency scored all 11 of his points in the second half. Nine of them came in the first seven minutes, and his 3-pointer with 13:25 to play tied the game at 51-51. Stover scored on the next two possessions, and Millersville never again trailed.
"I had a weird feeling (Davis) would play really well today," said Millersville head coach
Casey Stitzel. "He's the one that got us going defensively with deflections and steals. Then he made a couple threes. Hopefully he can take that confidence into Monday because if he can start making that it will help us a lot. It was good for us to have the guards step up. Keith had a much better second half."
The Marauders' second half included a 19-2 run. Millersville outscored Mansfield 47-25 in the final 20 minutes, shooting 68% from the field and making 4-of-8 from three. Mansfield finished the game with 10 threes on 28 attempts, but Millersville limited the Mountaineers to 36.4% shooting in the second half.
"We started attacking," said Stitzel. "We went through a stretch in the first half where we were jacking shots. We were being lackadaisical in transition defense. It was nice to see them come out and play better in the second half."
