Marauders get walk-off win in home opener

MILLERSVILLE, Pa. - Jimmy Losh went 4-for-5, drove in two runs and scored twice, and Bren Taylor scored the game-winning run on a walk-off wild pitch in Millersville's 6-5 triumph over Jefferson in the Marauders' home opener.

The first game ever played at Millersville in the month of February was decided in the bottom of the ninth, and the Marauders needed four runs in the final three innings to pull off the win over Jefferson, which was playing its first game of 2023. Millersville trailed 5-2 in the seventh, but Losh, Thomas Caufield and Taylor delivered in the clutch.

In seventh inning, Losh drove in a run, and Caufield singled on an 0-2 pitch with two outs in the seventh to bring the Marauders within one. Losh got the Marauders rolling in the ninth as well. He ground out an nine-pitch at bat before slashing a single up the middle. Taylor then smacked a liner into right-center for a stand-up triple, scoring Losh and tying the game at 5-5. Jefferson elected to intentionally walk Caufield to set-up a potential inning-ending double play. Reliever Anthony Pillari (0-1) struck out Keegan Soltis for the second out of the inning, but the second pitch to Cole Houser was spiked behind home plate and the high hop to the backstop was enough to get Taylor home from third for the victory.

"Losh played hurt the whole afternoon. He's so tough," said Millersville head coach Jon Shehan. "He put together that long at-bat and finally gets a hit up the middle. He's a professional hitter--a tough out. It was good to see Bren put a good swing on the ball after a slow start. Caufield had a big hit as well, and that's big for his confidence after hitting some balls hard with bad luck."

Harry Prince (1-0) gave the Marauders a chance at the comeback by tossing three effective innings in relief. He allowed one run on one hit and three walks. Starter Alex Mykut made his first appearance at Cooper Park since an injury on April 10, 2021. He tossed six innings with three unearned runs allowed, striking out five.

"(Harry) has really figured out the off-speed," said Shehan. "The slider is working for him. He made a mechanical adjustment and he's been lights out."

Prince has made three appearances and totaled five innings in Millersville's first four games, during which time he's allowed one run with six strikeouts. The Millersville bullpen has now allowed just two earned runs in 18 innings of work.

Losh was the lone Marauder with more than one hit, but Taylor drove in two runs. Losh's first-inning triple put Millersville on the board and was the 10th of his career, moving him into a tie for second place all-time at Millersville. He now trails Chas McCormick and Dan Neff by one triple. Losh's RBI in the seventh was the 100th of his career.
