Marauders conclude season on a positive note

MILLERSVILLE, Pa. - The Millersville women's soccer season ended on a high note with a 2-1 win over Lock Haven Friday at Pucillo Field.

Millersville's offense came out swinging with three early shots and the fourth led to a goal from Aalivia Wainwright in the 18th minute of play. Wainwright's goal came off a through ball from Taylor Whitmer. In the 20th minute, Bella Fiorenza had a huge save in a swarm of Bald Eagles off a corner to keep the lead 1-0. In the 32nd minute, Lock Haven was awarded a penalty kick, and Evelyn Ciaccia evened the score. Less than one minute later, however, Millersville's Maddie Zelkie scored the game winning goal off Whitmer's service from the top of the box.

The second half of play was rather quiet as neither team could score another goal, but on the attacking end, Wainwright made every effort to tally another goal to put the game away. Wainwright had five shots with two of them being placed on net.

Friday's game marked the last game for six members of the Marauders' roster.

POSTGAME REACTION FROM MATT PROCOPIO

  • On the team's effort: "Effort was much improved and what it needed to be for our final game."

  • Thoughts on the season: "The season was difficult. We lacked consistency throughout the year in many areas. I feel we could have achieved more as a group. As the coach and leader that ultimately falls on me. We all have to strive to get better and get back to the playoffs."

  • About the seniors and returners for 2024: "We return 21 players which is great to have with us all spring to learn and grow but we must work to improve. However, I cannot thank Bella, Ky, Bailey, Taylor, Skylar and Pogo for all they have done and given to the program. We will miss them and wish them nothing but the best going forward."
