MILLERSVILLE, Pa. - Millersville men's basketball led for all but 14 seconds of Saturday's 70-57 win over Chestnut Hill.
Jaden Faulkner led the Marauders with 17 points, while
Drew Stover and
Day Waters both scored 16.
Millersville (3-1) improved to 3-0 in Pucillo Gymnasium while Chestnut Hill (0-4) continues to seek its first win under first-year head coach Andrew Radomicki.
The result never felt in doubt as the Marauders led by double-figures before 10 minutes expired, and Waters sparked the Marauders on to a 15-0 run that spanned across halftime. With 3:19 remaining in the first half, Waters drilled a three, and then Millersville turned defense into offense.
Jacob Aryee picked off a pass and delivered a breakaway slam. On the next Griffins possession, Faulkner created a turnover, and Aryee found Waters for another fastbreak bucket. Stover closed the half with layup and two made free throws, giving Millersville a 33-19 lead at the break. Waters scored Millersville's first four points of the second half, growing the lead to 18. Despite Chestnut Hill shooting 53.8% from the field in the second half, the Marauders never led by fewer than 13 the rest of the way.
"I thought Jacob was great in that run," said Millersville head coach
Casey Stitzel. "We went a little small with our lineup. It gives us some versatility, and he's one of those guys who is so big and athletic where he gives us flexibility to switch. I thought he was really active on their best player, and gave him a different look. Our biggest growth we need is energy on the defensive end. Right now, we are willing to do it for half the game. We have to do it for 40 minutes, because in that run, when we fly around on defense, our offense looks so much better. It always comes down to getting stops, rebounds and pushing in transition."
Balanced scoring continued to be a calling card for the Marauders with four reaching double-figures for the third consecutive game. Faulkner made 4-of-9 shots from the field, 2-of-3 from three and 7-of-8 from the line.
Matt Dade chipped in 10 points. Waters' 16 points set a career high for the third time in four games, and he also tied for game-high lead with six rebounds. Stover, now shooting 78.9% from the field on the season, converted 7-of-8 shots, and he and Waters have both scored at least 10 points in all four games. Stover also blocked three shots. In just over 27 minutes of play, he posted a plus-29 plus/minus.
"(Drew) is playing a lot better," said Stitzel. "He now has an ability to learn from a mistake, not let it affect his confidence and not get too high or too low. He has a chance to be one of the best players in the league. When he gets fully healthy, hopefully over break, he can get even better."
GAME NOTES
- Millersville forced 17 turnovers but scored just nine points off of turnovers. Millersville also outscored Chestnut Hill 36-26 in the paint. Millersville has led all four opponents in that category.
- Millersville's win was its first over Chestnut Hill since 2014-15, snapping a streak of two-straight Chestnut Hill wins. It was the first meeting between the teams played in Pucillo Gymnasium.
MORE FROM STITZEL
- "We aren't playing great basketball right now. We absolutely can play better. I don't know if there are any teams maxing out, playing the best they can right now. But we have a lot of guys in that locker room, that if they keep buying into the process, they will absolutely get better, and we'll hopefully play better at the right time."
UP NEXT
- Millersville continues its home stretch against Jefferson on Tuesday, Nov. 21.
