Leik's early goal leads to shutout victory over Shepherd

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. – The Millersville men's soccer team opened Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division play tonight with a victory over the Shepherd Rams, 1-0.

It was a strong defensive effort for the Marauders (3-1-1, 1-0 PSAC East) that sent them home with a victory Wednesday night. The contest's only goal came from freshman Zander Leik at the 17' mark, which proved to be enough as the Rams (1-2-2, 0-1 PSAC East) were only able to send one shot on frame that was handled by Bobby Bosch.

This marks the Marauders' second shutout victory of the season and second for Bosch in goal as he improves to 3-1-1 on the season.

POSTGAME REACTION FROM HEAD COACH STEVE WIDDOWSON
Overall thoughts on the win: " It was certainly a game of two halves. I thought we were fantastic in the first half. Our movement and creativity was as good as we have seen this year and we just lacked the reward of more than one goal. Then the second half was very poor and we stopped doing what brought success in the first half. We slowed the ball down and got far too individual and made the game much harder than it should have been. However, we got a shut out and took the win, so in the end we met our objectives."

On utilizing the weekend off: "We will utilize it to rest both physically and mentally. We've been going for a long time, so an opportunity for a break must be taken advantage of. We will then get back to work on Monday and prepare for a big game on Wednesday night verses Shippensburg."

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
• Millersville held the edge in shots 13-6, and shots on goal 8-1.
• The Marauders held an edge in corner opportunities, 7-1.
• Bob Hennessey led the group in shots with 4, and shots on goal with 3.
• Bosch recorded one saved in the win.

UP NEXT
The Marauders will enjoy a weekend off before inviting Shippensburg to Pucillo Field on Wednesday, Sept. 14. Kickoff is slated for 7 p.m. under the lights.
