ABOUT THE GAMES

  • Millersville started its season with back-to-back wins over opponents ranked in the top 10, and now, the Marauders host a pair non-conference teams that have also started the season unbeaten. No. 9 Adelphi comes to Biemesderfer Stadium Thursday 1-0 following an overtime win over No. 10 New Haven. Newberry, Millersville's opponent on Sunday, is 2-0 and coming off a 2-1 overtime victory against Bloomsburg.
  • Millersville has started 2-0 for the fifth-straight season and the ninth time since 2012. It is just the second time in program history that Newberry has started a season 2-0.
  • Millersville is in the midst of a five-game home stand. The Marauders do not play a road game until Sept. 24, and do not play a conference team on the road until Oct. 15--game 11.

SCOUTING THE MARAUDERS

  • Millersville has already shown its ability to win close games as its first two wins have both been decided by one goal. The Marauders have scored five goals in those two games, and the attack has been balanced. The five goals have been scored by four different players, and five assists have come from four different players. No player on the roster has both a goal and an assist. Kate Strickland leads the team with two goals--one in each game. Brynne Ehrlacher leads the team with two assists.
  • Strickland also leads the team with seven shots, five of which were placed on goal. Millersville has put plenty of pressure on the opposing goalkeepers as 21 of their 31 shots taken have been on goal.
  • The defense in front of goalkeeper Kerstin Koons has also been solid, as Koons as faced only five shots in two games.
  • Millersville has given opponents few opportunities in second half. The two opponents have totaled just five shots and five penalty corners in the third and fourth quarters of games. Millersville, meanwhile, has 10 shots and 15 corners in the second half of games.

SCOUTING THE OPPONENTS

  • Hannah Dave has elevated the Newberry field hockey program in her four seasons as the head coach. She inherited a program that had never produced a winning record, and since 2019, her team is 30-16. The last two full seasons of 2019 and 2021 have resulted in double-digit wins. Through two games in 2022, Newberry has limited opponents to 6.5 shots per game, and only six shots have been placed on goal. With two goals and two assists, Tamsin Bangert is the top offensive threat for the Wolves.
  • Adelphi is no stranger to playing top competition. Adelphi went 14-7 in 2021, finishing as the NE10 runner-up and reached the NCAA Tournament. Jess Mulhern, a 2012 Adelphi graduate, is in her first year as the program's head coach, but she is familiar with Millersville. She spent eight years as an assistant at Limestone, playing Millersville four times. Three of those games were decided by one goal and two games went to overtime. Adelphi was ranked No. 9 in the first NFHCA Division II Poll and was voted fourth in the NE10 preseason poll. Kaylee Deleva was the 2021 NE10 Player of the Year after scoring 17 goals. She scored one goal in the team's win over New Haven. Adelphi out-shot New Haven 7-0 in the overtime period before Jillian Riche scored the game-winner off an assist from Morgan Minicozzi.

SERIES HISTORY

  • Millersville and Adelphi have played just once before. That meeting was in 2019 and resulted in a 3-0 win for the Marauders. Seven players on the current Millersville roster played in that game.
  • THE LAST MEETING VS. ADELPHI (Millersville 3, Adelphi 0 (Sept. 8, 2019): Millersville out-shot Adelphi 20-5 and held a 12-2 advantage in penalty corners, getting two goals from Asia Weaver and one from Brynne Ehrlacher.
  • Millersville is 6-0 all-time against Newberry with the first meeting coming in 2013. Five of the six games have been played at Biemesderfer Stadium. While Millersville out-scored Newberry 29-2 in the first three meetings, the scores have gotten much closer in recent years. In 2019, Millersville earned a narrow 3-1 victory.
  • THE LAST MEETING VS. NEWBERRY (Millersville 3, Newberry 1 (Sept. 20, 2019): Ranked No. 1 in the country at the time, Millersville needed three fourth-quarter goals to beat Newberry, 3-1. Despite the close score, Millersville held a 35-3 edge in shots, put 19 of those shots on goal and drew 23 penalty corners.
