GREENSBURG, Pa. – The No. 6 Millersville men's soccer team began its 2022 campaign with a dominate 3-0 victory over Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) foe, Seton Hill. Freshman midfielder, Christian Bowles saw 53 minutes of action during Thursday's season opener and made the most of every minute, scoring his first two collegiate goals. Sophomore, Richy Valverde picked up where he left off in 2021, scoring the other Marauder goal Thursday afternoon.
The 'Ville defense was able to shut down every offensive opportunity Seton Hill had, holding the Griffins to just three shots on frame throughout the match. Bobby Bosch earned the win in goal, collecting three saves, while defenders Aaron Maynard and Mike Kreider each played a full 90 minutes and played key roles in the shutout.
The win brings head coach Steve Widdowson to 10-3-2 all-time in season openers and gives the nationally ranked Marauders a 1-0 start in 2022.
POST GAME REACTION FROM HEAD COACH STEVE WIDDOWSON
• Overall thoughts on the team's performance: "Very pleased with the performance today. We produced a classic exhibition of Millersville soccer and I could not be prouder of the effort from everyone. There were still plenty of things we could do better but for the first game of the season, on the road against a solid team and with limited subs, I am very satisfied with our start."
• On the play from Bowles and Valverde: " While they put the ball in the net, all of our goals were great team goals. They showed good composure and ruthlessness in front of goal but there was also great teamwork to create the opportunity. If we keep playing with that unselfish mindset around the goal we will have lots of guys getting on the scoresheet which is what we want."
• On the quick turnaround Saturday: " Obviously recovery is our priority. It was very hot today and Saturday will be the same. We need to freshen up, share the workload again on Saturday and embrace the challenge. We need to suffer right now and be ready for it, knowing we will be rewarded if we have the correct mentality and attitude."
