Marauders struggle with runners on base and Shippensburg rallies for walk-off win

MILLERSVILLE, Pa. - No. 16 Millersville had plenty of opportunities to blow open Friday's series opener at Shippensburg. The Marauders out-hit the Raiders 11-3, drew three walks and were the beneficiaries of three Shippensburg errors but ended up leaving 13 of those runners on base. Shippensburg, which won its eighth in a row, took advantage of two walks and a wild pitch in the bottom of the ninth and won it 3-2 on a single from Joe Barbera.

After winning 12 in a row, Millersville (22-8, 8-2 PSAC East) has now dropped three of four and two in a row by one run. Half of Shippensburg's (15-17, 9-4 PSAC East) last eight wins have come by one run.

Millersville put at least one runner on base in each of the final seven innings and put two on with no outs in the fourth, fifth and eighth innings but managed just one run from those opportunities. Millersville went the full nine without an RBI base hit, scoring a run on a wild pitch in the third and a sacrifice fly in the fifth. Shippensburg drew leadoff walks in both the eighth and ninth innings and scored both times to complete the comeback.

Bren Taylor reached base three times, going 2-for-4 with a walk. Luke Trainer accounted for the team's lone RBI, and Cole Houser went 2-for-4 with a double.

GAME HIGHLIGHTS
• Millersville scored first with Jimmy Losh raced home on a wild pitch in the third inning. In the fifth, the lead grew to 2-0 when Taylor scored on Trainer's sacrifice fly. Taylor had reached on a fielding error and moved to third on a Thomas Caufield single.
• Shippensburg picked up a run in the fifth. In the top of the eighth, Justin Taylor reached on a fielding error, and Houser doubled, putting two runners in scoring position with no outs. But Shippensburg reliever Austen Labarre retired three in a row, two of which came by called third strikes. In the bottom of the inning, Shippensburg drew a leadoff walk and a hit batsman with one out, and a wild pitch put both runners in scoring position. An intentional walk loaded the bases for Andrew Chronister. He hit a grounder to first baseman Jimmy Kirk who elected to throw home for the force out but lost control of the ball on the glove-to-hand exchange.
• Millersville left two more runners on board in the ninth, and in the bottom of the inning, two of the first three Raiders drew full-count walks and a wild pitch moved the winning run to to third. On a 1-2 pitch, Barbera flipped an outside pitch into right field for the walk-off RBI.

NOTES
• Millersville starter Ben Wilchacky allowed two hits and three walks with four strikeouts over 5 2/3 innings. He did not allow an earned run.
• Shippensburg's Nick Zenga struck out 11 and walked just one while scattering 10 hits over seven innings. Jackson Lobianco (3-1) earned the win with a scoreless ninth.
