BLOOMSBURG, Pa. - Millersville baseball broke out of its PSAC East funk in a major way Saturday, trouncing Bloomsburg by scores of 8-4 and 24-6 to take the series and keep pace with West Chester and Shippensburg in the three-way tie atop the PSAC East.
Millersville (34-12, 15-6 PSAC East) entered the day on its first four-game PSAC East losing streak since 2012 but quickly made that history in game one by taking advantage of nine walks and a three-run homer from
Thomas Caufield while
Ben Wilchacky (7-1) picked up his first win since March 19. The Marauders carried that offensive momentum into game two, scoring at least three runs in each of the first four innings and finishing with 23 hits and its most runs in a game since April 19, 2016 and the most a Millersville team has ever scored against a PSAC East opponent.
Eight Marauders totaled two or more hits and five drove in three or more runs in the game two romp.
Bren Taylor led the way, going 4-for-4 with a homer, a double, four RBIs, two steals, a walk and five runs scored.
GAME ONE
• Leading 2-1 in the fourth, Millersville capitalized on some free bases offered up by the Huskies. A hit batsman, a wild pitch, walk and error on a pick-off play put
Cole Houser and
Chase Simmons in scoring position.
Tyler Wright and
Jimmy Losh provided some situational hitting with an RBI ground out and a sacrifice fly to extend Millersville's lead to three. The fourth inning proved a turning point in the game. After Millersville pushed two runs in, Bloomsburg put two on with a pair of two-out hits off Wilchacky. But Wilchacky got a pop out to end the threat.
• Caufield delivered his 12th home run of the season--a three-run shot--in the sixth to put Millersville's lead to 8-2. In the bottom of the frame, Bloomsburg put the first two runners on base, but Wilchacky again navigated the inning without further damage.
• After starting the season with six wins in six starts, Wilchacky had produced just one decision in his most recent five starts. On Saturday, he minimized the damage from eight hits and five walks to give up just two runs. At the plate,
Luke Trainer went 2-for-3 with two runs, and
Chase Simmons drew four walks and scored a run.
GAME TWO
• Millersville started hitting early and often in the series finale.
Jimmy Losh started the game with a double, and Taylor followed with a single. With two outs,
John Seibert plated a run with a single, and
Cole Houser smacked a three-run home run for a 4-0 Millersville lead. That was only the start. Taylor smacked a three-run homer in the second, and
Justin Taylor hit one of his own in the third.
•
Bren Taylor went 4-for-4 for the second time in two weeks.
Justin Taylor plated five runs with a double and home run. Trainer frove in four runs while, Seibert and Houser plated three.
• Rookie
Evan Rishell made his first start against PSAC East competition and stymied the Huskies, striking out eight and allowing just two runs while going six innings.
UP NEXT
