Mercyhurst bounces Marauders in PSAC Semifinal

BLOOMSBURG, Pa. - Mercyhurst leaned on the strength of its singles lineup to edge Millersville 4-2 in Friday's PSAC Semifinal. The Lakers' win advances them to the championship match against top-seeded Edinboro.

Millersville (9-8) entered the tournament as the No. 3 seed, and the second meeting of the season between the teams played out in similar fashion in favor of the second-seeded Lakers (10-9).

MATCH HIGHLIGHTS
• Millersville's doubles teams had been a strength all season, and Carlos Martinez-Lucas won 6-1 for their 21st victory of the season. Dylan Tull and Lino Morin paired for a 6-3 win in the No. 2 flight to give the Marauders a 1-0 lead in the match.
• Early in singles, everything was going the Marauders' way. Millersville's No. 1, Martinez-Lucas, rolled to a 6-2, 6-0 win--his third of the season over David Akinpetide. Dylan Tull (No. 2) and Frank Yanni (No. 3) both won their first sets, putting the Marauders on their way toward the needed four points. But Ben Davis rallied against Tull and won the second set 7-5 before taking the third 6-1. The Lakers also got straight-sets wins at No. 4, No. 5 and No. 6 singles, rendering Yanni's result unnecessary to finish.

NOTES
• Millersville must now await the May 3 NCAA Selection Show to see if its season continues in the NCAA Tournament. The Marauders were ranked No. 8 in the last Atlantic Region rankings. The top six teams receive a berth.
• Yanni and Martinez-Lucas' 21-3 record--the fourth-most wins and fourth-best winning percentage in program history. Tull closed the PSAC Tournament with a 17-7 record, and Martinez-Lucas capped his with a 16-8 mark.
