No. 15 Millersville continues winning ways with sweep of Salem

MILLERSVILLE, Pa. - Twelve years ago at Cooper Park, Millersville baseball swept a three-game series from Salem, giving Jon Shehan career wins 49, 50 and 51. Wednesday, on the same field, Shehan's 15th-ranked Marauders received strong starts from a pair of rookie pitchers and three home runs from their veteran hitters for wins No. 499 and 500 of Shehan's career.

Millersville's (31-8) 5-2 win in the opener and 8-0 romp in game two extended its winning streak to nine and improved the club to 16-1 at home.

Millersville shortstop Thomas Caufield homered, doubled, walked twice and scored three runs while Garet Blankenbiller (3-0) fanned seven batters in 4 1/3 innings in game one. In game two, Bren Taylor and Luke Trainer both hit home runs, and Evan Rishell (2-1) tossed a career-high seven innings for his first career complete game and shutout, striking out six while scattering six hits.

Shehan is now one of 51 active Division II head coaches with 500 wins, but he hit the mark in just 15 seasons after inheriting a team that went 9-37 the year before he took over. His .673 winning percentage is 12th among active Division II coaches with at least 10 seasons of service, and he ranks first all-time in winning percentage among PSAC coaches. Since 2011, the season of Shehan's first NCAA Regional, the Marauders are 430-169-1 (.718). In Division II history, only 16 head coaches own a winning percentage over .700 and just 11 posted that percentage over a period of more than 10 seasons.

GAME HIGHLIGHTS
• Three doubles in six batters gave Milllersville a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning of the opener. While Salem pulled within 4-2 in the fourth, Caufield gave his team some breathing room in the sixth with his 11 homer of the season, which moved him up to a tie for sixth on Millersville's single-season home run list. Salem did threaten in the seventh as a single and two-out walk brought the tying run to the plate, but Christian Wingard nailed down his first save of the season with three strikeouts in the inning, stranding both runners.
• Sam Morris, who was making his first appearance in the batting lineup in 18 days, started Millersville's game two scoring with an RBI single in the second. Caufield added to his PSAC-leading doubles total with one in the third that brought home Bren Taylor. That run-scoring hit made Caufield one of just 11 players in program history with 50 RBIs in a season. Taylor's homer in the fifth put two more on the board, and Trainer's bomb in the sixth was of the three-run variety. Taylor finished the game 2-for-3 with two runs and two RBIs. Rishell pitched past the fourth inning for the first time in his young career, tallying a career-high in strikeouts.

NOTES
• Millersville is now 5-0 all-time against Salem with four of the wins coming via shutout.
• Trainer moved into a tie with Dan Stoltzfus and Chas McCormick for 11th among Millersville players in career home runs.
