MILLERSVILLE, Pa. - Millersville baseball polished off a series sweep of Lock Haven Saturday with wins of 12-2 and 3-2 in the doubleheader, extending its winning streak to 10. The Marauders rolled behind 15 hits and six strong innings from
Jeff Taylor in game one before rallying from behind and getting a highlight-worthy defensive play from
Chase Simmons to dramatically end game two.
Taylor, the reigning PSAC East Pitcher of the Year, and
Conor Cook, last year's freshman of the year, returned to 2021 form after a slow start to 2022. Both pitchers recorded their first wins of the season and both logged a season-high innings pitched. At the plate,
Jimmy Kirk hit a home run in both games,
Luke Trainer and
Bren Taylor both totaled four hits in the doubleheader.
The Marauders improved to 19-5 overall and 6-0 in PSAC East action. Lock Haven's record dropped to 7-15 overall and 1-8 in PSAC East play.
GAME ONE
• Taylor worked efficiently. He was into the fourth inning before a Lock Haven batter worked a three-ball count, and Taylor was perfect through 3 2/3. He did not walk a batter and struck out six over six innings of work.
• Kirk got the Marauders rolling with a two-run blast to left field in the second inning. The Marauders scored five in the third on an RBI double from
Thomas Caufield, a two-run single from Trainer, and a single from
Sam Morris. Millersville did the rest of its scoring in the fourth. Trainer drove in two more with a double, Kirk plated his third run of the game with a single and later scored on a wild pitch.
Tyler Wright drove in one with a ground out.
• Five Marauders recorded two or more hits.
Keegan Soltis went 3-for-3 with three runs. Morris went 2-for-3, Trainer finished 3-for-4 with four RBIs.
Bren Taylor went 2-for-4 with two runs scored.
GAME TWO
• Trailing 3-2 in the ninth, Lock Haven's Camden Moors led off with a single and moved into scoring position on a sacrifice bunt. Then, with two outs, Jake Mastillo laced a single off the mound and into center field. Moors turned for home as a charging Simmons scooped the ball and fired to the plate. Millersville catcher
Cole Houser received the one-hop throw and placed the tag on Moors who tried to dive over the head of Houser. The potential game-tying run had been cut down at the plate, ending the series.
• Millersville trailed 1-0 until Kirk hit a solo home run to tie the score. Lock Haven retook the lead 2-1 in the top of the sixth, but in the bottom of the inning,
Jimmy Losh scored from first on
Bren Taylor's triple, and Soltis gave Millersville the lead for good with a sacrifice fly, scoring Taylor.
• Cook entered in the second inning after starter
Colby Gromlich exited. Cook went five innings, striking out four without allowing a walk.
Nate Young tossed three scoreless innings for his first save of the season.
POSTGAME REACTION FROM COACH JON SHEHAN
• On the outings from Taylor and Cook: "We've been waiting on Jeff to feel good. He looked confident today. He looked like the
Jeff Taylor from the last two years. He mixed in three pitches, and his slider is better than it was last year. Now that he is feeling good, that can even trend up for him. Cook was a bulldog today. Last year he came in after (
Alex Mykut) got hurt and he picked up his teammates. Today, Gromlich had some tension in his left shoulder and struggled in that first inning. He came in and picked up his teammates. That's what he's all about. He's a competitor."
• On the lineup's performance of late: "(R.J.) Kruse threw a really good ballgame in game two. He did not make many mistakes against a really good offense. It's tough to sit
Tyler Wright in that situation, but when you have 11 guys swinging the bat really well, you can play left-right match-ups. You saw Kirk come in and hit a really big home run that tied the game and got us back into it. It's fun to coach a team like this because it's just about figuring out who is hot."
•
On Simmons' play in the ninth inning: "Simmons has quietly bee one of the biggest pieces to the team. He's carried the bottom of the lineup; his defense has been outstanding in center field, especially with two guys hurt. It's great to see him mature after a couple of years of growing pains."
NOTES
• The 10-game winning streak is Millersville's longest since 2019. Millersville has started PSAC East play 6-0 for the first time since 2016.
UP NEXT
• The Marauders travel to Wilmington on Wednesday for a nine-inning game starting at 3 p.m.
