Millersville softball splits home opener behind strong outing from Crutcher

MILLERSVILLE, Pa. – The Millersville Marauders split their Thursday doubleheader against Goldey-Beacom, dropping game one by a final of 2-0 before bouncing back in the second game with a 5-1 win. In game two, Morgan Crutcher pitched a complete game one hitter, taking a no-no into the seventh before a one out triple fell down the right field line for the first Lightning hit.

HOW IT HAPPENED
GAME ONE: Goldey-Beacom 2 – Millersville 0
  • After three innings of scoreless play, the Lightning scored a run in the fourth, blasting a solo home run off of Marauder starter Alex Schaefer. Schaefer would fall to 3-5 on the season after scatting five hits over four innings of work while walking just one batter.
  • The Lightning added another run in the fifth, this time off of Mia Barone, who allowed just one run on one hit in three innings of relief.
  • Millersville struggled at the plate, recording six hits while walking zero times in the loss. Gabi Turner led the way for 'Ville with two hits.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Both teams recorded six hits, while the pitching staffs combined for just one total walk in a clean game that took just 90 minutes to play.
  • The potent Millersville offense was shut out for just the second time this season. The only other occasion was on March 10 against No.5 Grand Valley State in a 1-0 loss.
  • Turner now has five multi-hit games this season.
GAME TWO: Millersville 5 – Goldey-Beacom 1
  • The Marauders took their first lead of the game in the second as Turner came around to score on a wild pitch. She made it all the way around the bases without a ball being put in play, as she was hit by a pitch and went station to station thanks to three wild pitches from the Lightning.
  • Neither team recorded a hit until the bottom of the fifth, when the Marauder bats came alive and scored four runs on four hits. Barone got the inning rolling with a leadoff single to center, which was followed by a Kendra Bumgardner base hit and Hunter Little HBP to load the bases. Alexis Harkins came through with the big hit, driving in Barone and Bumgardner on a two-run single to put 'Ville ahead 3-0.
  • Gabby D'Ottavio added the fourth Marauder run on an RBI single later in the frame, plating Little. Millersville would again score on a wild pitch, as Harkins came in to score the final Marauder run in the frame.
  • Crutcher was the story of the game, taking a no-no into the seventh as she flirted with history. The lone hit allowed was a one out triple, which eventually led to the only Lightning run as Goldey-Beacom scored on a fielder's choice later in the seventh. Crutcher picked up five strikeouts while walking just a single batter as her record improved to 3-4 on the season with the win.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • The Marauders outhit the Lightning six to one.
  • The complete game was the second of Crutcher's career, with her first one coming almost exactly one year ago on March 26, 2021, against East Stroudsburg University in a 5-3 Marauder win.
  • This was the first complete game thrown by any Marauder pitcher in 2022.
  • Little again was a spark for the offense, going 1-for-1 at the plate with a pair of walks.
REACTION FROM HEAD COACH JEN PROBST:
On the offensive finding a grove in game two: "We still aren't us offensively, but I was proud of them being able to string a couple quality at bats and score some runs."
On the complete game from Crutcher "Morgan had her best outing of the year so far. She hit spots well and her change up was really on."

UP NEXT
Millersville will host another doubleheader tomorrow, Friday March 18, as the Marauders welcome the Wilmington University Wildcats for a doubleheader. First pitch is scheduled for 2:30 p.m.
