MILLERSVILLE, Pa. - The Millersville Marauders are rolling. Behind 20 points from
Khari Williams and a staunch defensive effort led by
Caden Najdawi's career-high five blocks, Millersville topped East Stroudsburg 82-73 to stay in first place in the PSAC East with its 10th win in a row.
East Stroudsburg (13-7, 11-5 PSAC) entered the game sitting just a half-game behind the Marauders in the standings, but Millersville pushed its record to 19-4 overall and 13-4 in league play with a convincing performance that saw the Marauders lead by as many as 18 points with fewer than three minutes left.
Williams, who hit 3-of-4 from three and 7-of-8 from the line, got the Marauders going with eight-straight points after ESU jumped out to a quick 5-0 lead.
Jaden Faulkner scored 18 points with his savvy finishing at the rim.
Justin Nwosu recorded his second-consecutive double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds.
GAME HIGHLIGHTS
• Millersville handled East Stroudsburg's frantic full-court court press with aplomb, but it was their defensive effort in the half-court that made all the difference. Millersville got stops, preventing the Warriors from setting up its press. Millersville blocked seven shots, held a 38-32 advantage on the glass, and held the Warriors to 11-of-34 shooting (.324) in the second half. It was much like the Marauders' win over East Stroudsburg on Jan. 12 when they held the Warriors to 28 points on 25% shooting.
• Millersville's 3-point shooting in the first half turned a one-point deficit into a double-digit lead. Over a six-minute stretch beginning with just over 13 minutes remaining, Millersville drilled 5-of-6 3-pointers and 7-of-10 shots from the field for a 24-8 run that put it up 37-22. The Marauders made 7-of-10 3-pointers in the first 20 minutes.
• East Stroudsburg managed to chip Millersville's lead down to 50-44 with 17 minutes remaining in the game, but the Marauders answered with a momentum-swinging alley-oop dunk from Faulkner to Najdawi. That started an 11-3 run in which Millersville held ESU to 1-of-8 shooting from the field, and with fewer than 11 minutes left, Millersville's lead was back to 14. ESU didn't get back within 10 points until two minutes to play.
POSTGAME REACTION FROM COACH CASEY STITZEL
•
On the team's defensive performance: "We have the talent to do it. We have the rim protector. We have the four who can guard inside and guard on the peremiter. So, if you put a pick-and-pop guy, we can guard that. If you have someone from the post who can drive it, we can guard that. We have three really big guards who know our system. We took a lot of time on defense and rebounding this year, and it's paying off. There was a stretch where we expanded the lead that (East Stroudsburg) couldn't score."
•
On Williams sparking the team: "That got us going. I thought we were a little too hyped up. He settled us down when he hit those two threes. He was huge for us. His heart. He wants to be coached. He comes from a great family. I'm super proud of him. He really carried us in that stretch."
•
On Faulkner's performance: "He's changed his mentality. That's the wild card. I don't think any team in the league has a wild card like us. Two years ago we had the best player in the league, and obviously, he's working himself back from a health standpoint. He's getting more comfortable, and if he keeps getting better, that's a wild card for us. He was awesome tonight. Every time they made a run he had an answer. He did a great job on defense and had some big-time passes down the stretch too."
