Marauders held in check by Glenville State

GLENVILLE, W.Va. - Glenville State continued its impressive start to the season, blanking Millersville 5-0 behind seven scoreless innings from Austin Corn and a five-run third inning.

Glenville State improved to 10-1, a record that includes three wins over Mansfield and wins this weekend against Kutztown, Mercyhurst and Millersville (5-4). Both teams recorded six hits, and Millersville drew four walks but stranded nine runners. The Marauders put at least one runner on base in eight of nine innings, but could not get the run-delivering hits they needed while Glenville State strung together five hits and some good fortune for its big third inning.

Darin Miller led Millersville by going 2-for-3 with a double and walk. Jimmy Kirk doubled as a pinch hitter in the ninth. Corn improve to 2-0 by allowing four hits and three walks and striking out seven. Matthew Shamany (1-1) struck out six, and all five hits he allowed came in the third.

GAME HIGHLIGHTS
• Millersville tested Corn in the early innings. Jimmy Losh led off the game with a single and later advanced to second with a stolen base. Miller led off the second with a single, and also moved into scoring position before Corn escaped. Tyler Wright started the third with a walk, but Millersville eventually left two runners aboard.
• In the bottom of the third is when Corn got some help from his bats. Zach Morris' fly to right was lost in the sun and dropped in for a double. After a walk, Mitch Mohr beat out a bunt single to load the bases. Three seeing-eye singles through the infield brought home all five of the game's runs.
• With a five-run lead, Corn settled in, striking out two in a 1-2-3 fourth. He did not give up another hit until Miller's two-out double to left in the sixth. The Marauders threatened again in the ninth as Miller led off with a walk, and Kirk doubled to put two in scoring position, but reliever Jose Rodriguez, who tossed two scoreless innings, quickly closed the door on any potential Millersville rally.

POSTGAME REACTION FROM COACH JON SHEHAN
On execution vs. Glenville State: "(Glenville State) is pitching well, played good defense, and we strung some mistakes together in the third inning. We didn't give ourselves a chance to do what we do with our offense in the late inning. Shamany pitched well through that inning. It was really one of our best pitched games so far. (Christian) Wingard pitched well in the middle innings. (Colby) Gromlich turned the corner."
On playing with consistency: "We have to be more baseball savvy. (Glenville State) had a freshman throwing for them, and we had him on the ropes in the early innings, and instead of making him work, we get ourselves out on three consecutive pitches. That gives him momentum. We had a chance to get them into the bullpen in the third game of the weekend and didn't do it. We didn't get a two-out hit and could have broken the game open. We had chances to bunt and hit and run and didn't get it done. We can't always score nine runs. You have to find a way to beat teams in low-scoring games. Glenville State beat us and Mercyhurst in the same weekend, so I'd say they are the real deal."

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
Christian Wingard and Colby Gromlich gave the Marauders six outstanding innings or relief work. Wingard struck out six in three hitless innings. Gromlich allowed just one single and struck out four in two innings.
• Losh's single extended his hitting streak to 10 games dating back to last season. Thomas Caufield singled, giving him at least one hit in eight of nine games this season.
