SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. - Shepherd put an emphatic end to Millersville's 12-game winning streak Wednesday night, topping the visiting Marauders, 89-71.
Millersville (21-5, 15-5 PSAC) struggled at both ends of the court, and its early offensive woes were compounded on defense as Shepherd (11-13, 7-11) buried the Marauders in an avalanche of 3-pointers and made buckets. The Rams drilled 11-of-21 threes and shot 61.1% from the field in the game, including 62% in a 45-27 first-half onslaught. It was a stunning offensive performance for a Shepherd team that entered the game averaging 65 points per game and hadn't scored more than 81 in regulation all season. Shepherd had shot better than 50% just three times before Wednesday's game.
Less than two weeks ago, Millersville led Division II in 3-point field goal percentage defense, but each of the last two opponents has hit double-digit threes and four of the last five have shot better than 40% from three.
Shepherd's Kyle Daggett sank 9-of-13 shots from the field, 3-of-4 from three, and 4-of-4 from the line for a game-high 25 points. Phillip Jordan also scored 20 for the Rams.
Ryan Davis came off the bench to lead Millersville with a season-high 18 points on 7-of-11 shooting.
GAME HIGHLIGHTS
• Shepherd pulled away from Millersville early, and the Marauders never recovered. The Rams held a slight 10-7 lead just over seven minutes into the game, but in a span of fewer than three minutes, the Rams made five-straight shots while Millersville went 0-for-2 with two turnovers. Millersville was undone by eight first-half turnovers, and the Rams led by 18 at the break.
• Halftime hardly slowed the Rams. They made their first four shots of the second half while Millersville missed three in a row, and the 9-0 run put Millersville down by 27. Millersville trailed by as many as 29 following two Daggett free throws with 10:46 to play.
POST GAME REACTION FROM COACH CASEY STITIZEL
•
On if it was Shepherd's offense or breakdowns on defense: "A little bit of both. We are getting team's best games. We've been struggling a little, and I think we got a little comfortable the last week and a half. We are fatigued a bit and the bye has come at the perfect time. No team wants to lose, but there's something to be said for taking one before the playoffs start. We need to get the chip on our shoulder back."
•
On the grind of the winning streak: "There is an emotional part of it too. A lot of people talk about fatigue as your body, but it's been so long since we've experienced failure. We won two games last week that we probably shouldn't have, but we did because we were better. But there's something to be said about resetting. Going in, I thought this could be a danger game, and right from the start, we didn't have it. With the bye, we can get back to actually having a real practice and fixing some things. We've had so many games and tired legs that we haven't really practiced. We've had one slip-up in 13 games, and it is how you respond and adjust after that."
•
On a chance to win the PSAC East at home: "That's all you can ask for going into the last week in the season. There are lots of teams that are scoreboard watching. But we control our own destiny. We need to get better, get some rest and we'll be back at it next week. We've played a lot of road games lately, and it's hard to sustain it on the road. This group has to get used to getting everyone's best game, and this will be good for us going forward."
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
• After scoring 27 in the first half, Millersville scored 44 in the second, making 6-of-15 3-pointers and 10-of-13 free throws. Still, Millersville shot 30.8% from three in the game.
• Millersville received 34 points from its bench.
Kaleb Torrence drilled 3-of-3 3-pointers for a career-high nine points.
James Sullivan, with 14 points, was the only other Marauder to reach double figures. That ends a streak of nine-straight games with four Marauders scoring in double figures.
NOTES
• Early on Wednesday, Millersville was ranked No. 7 in the first official NCAA Atlantic Regional rankings. It was the first of three rankings before the eight-team field for the NCAA regional is set following the conference tournament championships games on March 6.
• The loss puts Millersville even with East Stroudsburg in the loss column, but still two up in the win column, as East Stroudsburg's game against Mansfield Wednesday was postponed. Millersville owns tiebreakers against both ESU and Shippensburg, which currently sits in third place in the PSAC East. The Marauders can clinch its first PSAC East title since 2008 by winning its final two home games or a combination of a win and an ESU loss.
• Millersville's 12-game winning streak, all of which came against PSAC teams, was the sixth-longest streak in program history.
NEXT
• Five of Millersville's previous seven games had come on the road. Now, the Marauders have an off weekend before closing the regular season with back-to-back home games against West Chester (Feb. 23) and Lock Haven (Feb. 26).
