No. 23 Virginia Union pulls away from Marauders

PETERSBURG, Va. - For the second day in a row, Millersville's opponent turned a close game at the break into a win with a quick start to the final 20 minutes. On Saturday, No. 23 Virginia Union outscored the Marauders 12-1 in the first three-plus minutes of the second half and held on for an 61-49 win.

It was déjà vu for the 0-2 Marauders. On Friday, Virginia State used a bucket just before the first half buzzer to propel it toward a one-sided second half. Virginia Union's (2-0) Khalil Diggin's did the same for his team, hitting a floater with five seconds left for a 25-24 halftime lead. Virginia Union then drilled its first five shots of the second half to turn a one-point game into a double-digit lead in fewer than four minutes. Millersville did not make a field goal until Matt Dade scored with 16:17 to play. Virginia Union went on to shoot 60.9% from the field in the second half, one day after Virginia State shot 62% in the second.

Virginia Union, which held Shippensburg to 56 points and 16.7% shooting from three on Friday, smothered the Marauders on Saturday as well. Millersville shot just 28.6% from the field and could not bust Virginia Union's match-up zone with the three, making 5-of-21. Millersville allowed 44 points in the paint against Virginia State, and it was the same story Saturday as Virginia Union held a 34-14 advantage inside. Millersville also did itself no favors at the line, shooting 16-of-25.

Mekhi Hendricks led Millersville in scoring with 11 points on 4-of-11 shooting from the field and 3-of-7 shooting from three. Ryan Davis added 10 points.

Millersville trailed by as many as 12 in the second before briefly pulling within three points with a quick run that featured a Drew Stover right-handed hook shot, and Hendricks' banked-in 3-pointer, which made the score 41-38 with 11:49 to play. But Millersville missed its next eight field goals (five of them threes) and scored just five points over the next seven minutes. Virginia Union took advantage of Millersville's struggles and built the lead to as many as 15.

The series between Millersville and Virginia Union is now tied at 5-5 all-time. Millersville is 0-4 away from Pucillo Gymnasium against VUU.
