Frostburg State stuns Marauders in overtime

FROSTBURG, Md. - It was a game of missed opportunities for the fourth-ranked Millersville Marauders. Despite drawing 22 penalty corners and taking 20 shots, the Marauders suffered their first loss of the season as Frostburg State pulled off a 2-1 upset in overtime.

Millersville (7-1) totaled 17 more corners and 10 more shots than the Bobcats and pushed the ball into the scoring circle a number of times without coming up with either a corner or a shot. The disjointed attack allowed Frostburg State (6-4) to score its second win over a ranked team this season.

The game-winner came from Macy Layfield 7:51 into the overtime period. Off a penalty corner, The Bobcats' initial shot was blocked in front by a Marauder defender, but Layfield slipped the follow-up through Millersville keeper Kerstin Koons

The entire game was a grind for the Marauders, who the majority of the game after Frostburg State's Emilie Bonhivert scored in the first quarter after a couple long passes on a quick change of possession. That marked the first time all season that Millersville had trailed.

Millersville did not find the equalizer until the final minute of the third quarter when Ashlynn Lennon hit a smash from the top of the circle off a penalty corner.

Millersville converted just one of its 11 shots on goal as Madison Manalansan made a season-high 10 saves. Koons stopped four of the six shots she faced.

NOTES
•  The game was only the second true road game of the season for the Marauders, and it was the program's first trip to Frostburg State. Millersville won last year's game 6-0 at home.
•  Frostburg State is the first team from outside the PSAC to beat Millersville in a regular season game since Sept. 5, 2016.

UP NEXT
• Millersville stays in Frostburg and plays a neutral site game against Maryville on Sunday.
