BLOOMSBURG, Pa. – Bob Hennessey scored an unassisted goal in the 76th minute of Saturday night's road match at Bloomsburg to lift the Marauders to a 1-0 victory over the Huskies.
Millersville came into Saturday's contest as one of, if not the hottest team in the conference, posting a 4-0-1 record in its previous four games while outscoring opponents 12-1. 'Ville continued its dominance in the win, shutting out the PSAC East Champs for just the fourth time this season and outshooting them 20-10, including a 7-4 edge on-goal.
Despite the win, both East Stroudsburg and West Chester also earned victories on Saturday, eliminating the Marauders from postseason contention. Head coach
Steve Widdowson and the Millersville men's soccer program will miss postseason play for the first time since 2014, ending its current run as the PSAC's three-time defending champions.
The Marauders posted a 10-3-5 (6-2-4 PSAC East) record in 2022 -- Widdowson's 13th season with double-digit victories since his start at Millersville in 2007.
POSTGAME REACTION FROM HEAD COACH STEVE WIDDOWSON
On tonight's win: "I thought we were great tonight. I asked everyone to play in a manor that we could walk off the field and be proud of our performance. They achieved that goal. We played some fantastic soccer and worked so hard and earned the win. We continued to waste good opportunities in the attacking third and this is an area we will be focusing on in the off season. Most importantly tonight, we sent our seniors off with a great performance. They have had remarkable and memorable careers and have left an amazing impression on the program."
Â
On the 2022 season: "This has been a really strange season. Our goals for and goals against averages are the best in many, many years. We had shutouts in 50% of our games but we haven't made the playoffs. We had a couple of weeks that made the difference. We had three ties in a row in one stretch and two losses in a row in another. We do better in just one of those games are we would be in the playoffs. That's how close it can be and what our returners need to be aware of. We will define our success differently this year and be ready to go again in 2023."
