The Millersville men's soccer team travels to Bloomsburg this weekend in hopes of punching a ticket to the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Tournament. However, the Marauders no longer control their own destiny heading into the final weekend of conference play as they'll need to secure a win over Bloomsburg, who clinched the PSAC East Title on Wednesday, plus see a loss or draw from either West Chester or East Stroudsburg, who each play a team without a win in conference play (WCU at Shepherd; ESU vs. Shippensburg). Head coach
Steve Widdowson has brought the Marauders to six consecutive PSAC Tournaments, being crowned champion the last three seasons.
Although the Marauders need help to qualify for the postseason, their only focus is beating Bloomsburg this weekend. "Unfortunately, we no longer control our destiny, but our focus needs to be solely on ourselves and our performance on Saturday," said Widdowson. "Regardless of anything else that happens, we need to put in a performance to be proud of to end the regular season. We will then see where the chips land regarding the playoffs, but we need to treat Saturday's game with the same determination as we would a championship game. If we get a bit of help and make the playoffs, then great. If not, then we need to perform at a level that allows us to walk off the field with our heads held high."
The last time 'Ville met the Huskies was on Saturday, Oct. 1 in a game that ended 2-1 in Bloomsburg's favor. The Marauders were able to jump out to an early lead, courtesy of a
Zander Leik goal, before giving up two unanswered Husky scores, which led to the one-goal defeat. Since that loss, Widdowson's group has posted a 4-1-1 record and looked dominate for most of that stretch, outscoring opponents 12-2 and controlling possession for most of the combined 540 minutes played.
On the other side, Bloomsburg has gone 5-1 since their win over Millersville and recently clinched the PSAC East title with a 3-2 victory over Shippensburg on Wednesday night. In those six games, the Huskies have outscored opponents 18-8, scoring three or more goals in every game besides their loss, which came against West Chester by a score of 1-0.
The match is on Saturday, Oct. 29 at 7 p.m. on the PSAC Digital Network. Â Â
