MILLERSVILLE, Pa. – The Millersville men's soccer team put on one of its best performances of 2022 on Saturday afternoon, as the Marauders cruised to a three-goal, shutout victory over the West Chester Golden Rams.
The Marauders, who have now outscored their last three opponents by a combined score of 10-1, dominated the Golden Rams from start to finish. 'Ville (8-3-4, 5-2-3 PSAC East) outshot West Chester 20-7, including a 7-1 edge on-goal, drew five more corner kicks than the Golden Rams and controlled possession for the majority of Saturday's match.
The scoring began at the 31:41 mark when
Matt Lynch found
Christian Vorchheimer in front of the Golden Ram (7-4-2, 4-2-2 PSAC East) net for the sophomore's fourth goal of the season, and third in the last two games. This also marked Vorchheimer's second game-winning goal of 2022.
The next goal came after the half as the game remained a one-goal Marauder lead heading into the 61'. Lynch, who assisted the previous score, found himself on the scoring end of the Marauders' second goal of the game.
Spencer Shortt, the Marauders assist leader, danced his way around four purple jerseys in the WCU box before serving the ball to a wide-open Lynch for an insurance goal.
Just under 20 minutes later the red-hot Marauders would strike again as Shortt sent a free kick in front of the Golden Ram net for an
Aaron Maynard header, the defenders fourth goal of the year.
The win pushed 'Ville to the top of the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern division standings for the time being. The Marauders will take a brief break from PSAC East play on Wednesday, Oct. 19 when they visit Molloy before wrapping up the regular season with games against East Stroudsburg and Bloomsburg, currently two of the East's top-three teams.
POSTGAME REACTION FROM HEAD COACH STEVE WIDDOWSON
Overall thoughts on the win:Â "I thought it was our most complete performance of the season. We did great things with the ball and really executed our game plan. Our defending was superb and a very accomplished team effort. We have talked about peaking at the right time and we are trending that way. We just have to stay focused and make sure today was just another step forward and not the peak."
On the defense "Shutouts are always important and especially late in the season. It builds confidence and provides an added level of satisfaction. We defended well as a team and pressed at the right time and in good areas. I thought we showed great commitment in our defending and players stepped up in important moments throughout the game to preserve the shutout."
