MILLERSVILLE, Pa. - The fifth-ranked Millersville field hockey controlled play for all 60 minutes and earned a 2-0 road win Saturday at Mercyhurst.
While the final margin of victory was just two, the outcome was never in doubt.
Kate Strickland scored her 13th goal of the season just 41 seconds into the game and before Mercyhurst attempted a shot or a penalty corner,
Georgia Werkiser made the score 2-0 with a goal in the third quarter.
Millersville held a 26-1 advantage in shots and a 19-1 advantage in corners. The Lakers were held without any semblance of offense until just 10 minutes remaining in the game. Millersville, meanwhile, peppered Laker goalkeeper Kayla Desormeau relentlessly. Desormeau performed admirably in the cage, tallying 16 saves. Millersville's
Kerstin Koons stopped the the Lakers' only shot.
Strickland, who has now scored in 10 of the team's 11 games, moved into fifth place on Millersville's single-season scoring list with outstanding skill and effort early early in the game. Strickland received a long pass just inside the circle, poked the ball through the legs of a defender, weaved to the left of another and to the right of the keeper before diving forward and scoring.
Werkiser scored her second goal of the season off an assist from
Codi Bollinger in the second minute of the third quarter. Off a penalty corner, the Marauders cracked two shots at Desormeau. The second smacked the stick of Bollinger, who had posted up in front of the cage. The deflection went to Werkiser, who had just one Laker defender to beat.
The win improved Millersville to 10-1 overall and 3-0 in PSAC play. Millersville is the only team still unbeaten in conference play. It is Millersville's best start through 11 games since the 2015 club started the season 13-0.
