Millersville can't find run to catch Shippensburg

MILLERSVILLE, Pa. - After fixing the turnovers issues that cost them in the first half, the Millersville Marauders were undone by their defensive rebounding and outside shooting in the second. Unable to put all areas of the game together, Millersville fell at home to PSAC East-leading Shippensburg Saturday, 75-64.

Shippensburg (9-3, 6-1 PSAC) won its seventh in a row behind 19 points from Kyon Hardy and 17 from Carlos Carter. Millersville (9-4, 3-4 PSAC) was led by Caden Najdawi's double-double of 17 points and 10 rebounds.

The Raiders got out to a 42-32 lead at the half largely because of fast-break buckets off Millersville miscues. Millersville's 10 turnovers translated to 19 Shippensburg points in the opening 20 minutes. Then, after Millersville out-rebounded the Raiders 20-12 in the first half, Shippensburg held a 26-18 edge in the second half, including 10 offensive boards that 13 points. Millersville also missed all eight of its 3-pointer attempts in the second half and finished 4-of-19 for the game.

GAME HIGHLIGHTS
• It was a two-point game at 29-27 Shippensburg lead after a Jaden Faulkner free throw with 4:34 left in the first half. But in those remaining minutes, Shippensburg went on a 13-6 run helped by four Millersville turnovers and Carlos Carter's buzzer-beater 3-pointer.
• The second half started promisingly as Millersville scored on back-to-back possessions, but the run was short-lived as Millersville went without a field goal for the next four minutes, going 0-for-4 from the floor while Shippensburg went on a 9-2 run with three second-chance opportunities. With the Marauders unable to knock down shots (14-of-32 in the second half), Shippensburg extended the lead to as many as 17.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
• Nwosu scored in double-figures for the five-straight game, hitting 5-of-7 shots from the field and 3-of-5 from three. Eleven of his 13 points came in the first half. Najdawi recorded his third double-double of the season and also blocked two shots.
Jaden Faulkner scored 13 points and led Millersville with six assists and three steals.

POSTGAME REACTION FROM COACH CASEY STITZEL
On the team's performance: "In the first half, our defense wasn't that bad but it was the touchdown turnovers. Turnovers in any regard isn't good, but live-ball turnovers are a double-whammy. It's just little plays, throwing bounce passes when they should be lobs, not looking inside for Caden and trying to get a home run play. You take half of those turnovers away and it's a tied game at the half. In the second half, we gave up 10 offensive rebounds. We held them to 30% shooting. If we get those rebounds we can get into transition. We couldn't make a shot so we started to play hero ball. It's not a turnover on the stat sheet but when you take a quick shot and it leads to a rebound going the other way, it's just as bad. To beat a team you have to be consistent. You can have a bad stretch but you can't have a bad half. We just let that stuff linger."
On finding the solution for offensive issues: "Right now, we practice one way, and when the game starts, we play a different way. The question is 'why?' I don't know if I have that answer right now. We started both halves today well with good defense and getting into transition. Then we have a four-minute stretch with mistakes. We have not had a game this season where you look at the box score and see six-seven guys played well. We have to get more consistent as a team."

NOTES
Shippensburg has now won seven in a row against Millersville, holding the Marauders to 67 points or fewer in six of the seven games.
Nwosu has scored at least 10 points and grabbed at least five rebounds in five-straight games. He's shot 9-of-19 from three in that stretch as well.

UP NEXT
