Marauders escape Bloomsburg with late rally

BLOOMSBURG, Pa. - Millersville scored its seventh consecutive victory and fourth-straight road win Saturday, but the three-win Bloomsburg Huskies sure did make it interesting. With the hot-shooting James Sullivan saddled with foul trouble, Khari Williams scored 16 of his game-high 28 points in the second half and helped the Marauders rally from a late four-point deficit and win, 80-74.

Millersville (16-4, 10-4 PSAC) led by as many as 12 in the game, but the Huskies caught fire on the offensive end in the second half, sinking 17-of-36 shots, and not only erased the double-digit deficit but led by as many as four points on two occasions, including as late as 7:31 to play. Millersville, who had four players score double-figures for the fourth game in a row, received some crucial buckets from Williams, Jaden Faulkner (10 points in the second half), Mekhi Hendricks (10 points) and Caden Najdawi (11 points).

Sullivan, who had scored 21 or more in four of Millersville's last six wins, scored nine, but played just 15 minutes before being whistled for five fouls.

For the first time in six games, Millersville failed to grab 40 rebounds and was out-rebounded 40-35, marking just the third time all season that Millersville won a game despite losing the rebounding battle.

GAME HIGHLIGHTS
• Bloomsburg's Justin Anderson, who scored 23 points, and Jake Nelson, who totaled a double-double of 15 points and 13 rebounds, did their best to play the role of spoiler against the streaking Marauders. Nelson, in particular, gave the Marauders fits in the second half as he scored 13 points. After Najdawi's alley-oop slam got the Marauders started in the second, Bloomsburg made eight of its next 13 shots, outscoring Millersville 21-11 over the next seven minutes. The Huskies took their first lead of the game at 48-47 with 12:47 to play. The teams traded the lead twice until Bloomsburg grabbed control and built a 64-60 advantage following two Travis Elmore free throws.
• One minute later, Hendricks sank a 3-pointer, and Williams followed a Bloomsburg turnover with a score, giving Millersville the lead right back, 65-64. While the Huskies managed to tie the game at 66, another alley-oop to Najdawi and a driving bucket from Faulkner on back-to-back possessions gave Millersville a four-point lead--a lead it would not relinquish.
• Nelson got the Huskies to within 73-72 with two minutes to play, but Williams drew the fifth foul on Anderson and sank two free throws. Later, leading by two, Faulkner made both of his shots from the stripe to put Millersville's lead back to two possessions. With 19 seconds left, Faulkner found Hendricks on a back-door cut, which gave Millersville its six-point winning margin.

POSTGAME REACTION FROM COACH CASEY STITZEL
On the feeling in the huddle down four: "It is always challenging on the road. A 1 o'clock game, third game this week. We beat them by 32 at home, so you knew they would be ready to play. The shots they didn't make at our place, they made in their gym. Composure is the word. We didn't panic. We didn't make any crazy adjustments. James in foul trouble was adversity we dealt with. Mekhi hit a huge three, Jaden made plays, and Khari was great all game. We stay composed and that's the benefit of having an older team and having good leadership. I knew we'd get (Bloomsburg's) best shot. I knew coming in that this would be one of the toughest games we'd have all year."
On Williams and Hendricks stepping up: "They made big play after big play. Mekhi had the back-door cut, Jaden made a great pass late, and that put pressure on Bloomsburg to take a three. It wasn't James' night, but that's what good teams do. They pick up their teammates."

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
• Williams sank 7-of-14 shots from the field and 11-of-14 free throws. He also led the team with nine rebounds. Faulkner added a team-high 13 points and four assists.
Justin Nwosu gave the Marauders 11 points and eight rebounds, including a pair of put-backs off of four offensive rebounds. Najdawi added eight rebounds to go with his 11 points. Hendricks made 4-of-5 shots from the field, including both free throws.
