Friese sets the all-time record for home runs in Millersville’s sweep over Kutztown

KUTZTOWN, Pa. - The Millersville University baseball team traveled to Kutztown on Saturday afternoon to complete its last series of the 2021 regular season. The Marauders piled up runs in game one for a 14-2 win, and out-scored the Golden Bears 9-2 in game two to complete the series sweep. 

Cole Friese broke the career home run record in game one with his 27th career home run and added his 28th in game two. Friese passed Millersville hall of famer Ryan Brink (1997-2000).

With the sweep on Saturday, Millersville ended the regular season with a record of 26-11 (23-8 PSAC East) and enter the PSAC Tournament as the PSAC East's No. 1 seed. 

GAME ONE (MILLERSVILLE 14, KUTZTOWN 2)
• Millersville was first on the board with Bren Taylor scoring off a wild pitch in the top of the first inning. The Golden Bears scored their only two runs of the game in the bottom of the first with a homer to left field from Mitchell Peers.
• A double from Luke Trainer in the third brought home Taylor and Jimmy Losh. Trainer advanced to third from a singled bunt to the pitcher by Friese after a throwing error was made Trainer was able to return home to make it 4-2 Millersville.
• In the fourth, Tyler Wright scored off of a double by Taylor. After making it to third, Taylor took home on a wild pitch, putting the Marauders up 6-2.
• Millersville scored eight runs in the last two innings of game one. Nick Mancuso doubled to the right field line for an RBI in the fifth. Trainer singled to right center which added two more runs for Millersville. Friese hit his record-breaking home run to left center field for two RBIs. The top of the fifth inning ended with an 11-2 lead for the Marauders. In the sixth, Chase Simmons homered to left field for three RBIs, extending Millersville's lead to 14-2. 
• Millersville finished with 15 hits, and Taylor went 4-for-5. 
• Conor Cook pitched all seven innings for the Marauders, striking out 12 while walking just two. He allowed just three hits including just one over the final six innings. Cook is currently 4-0 for Millersville.
 
GAME TWO (MILLERSVILLE 9, KUTZTOWN 2)
• Millersville took a 2-0 lead for the first two innings. Friese had a sacrifice fly out to left field bringing Losh home in the first. Losh then drove in a run with a single in the top of the third. Kutztown scored in the bottom of the third when Zach Moretski scored on a wild pitch and evened the score 2-2 in the fourth when Collin Bishop hit a sacrifice fly to center field.
• The Marauders broke the game open in the sixth. Tyler Wright's single to center field pushed Justin Taylor to third, and allowed Mark Miller to score for Millersville, 3-2. Taylor scored on a wild pitch.. Losh tripled down the left line for an RBI followed and was followed by Bren Taylor who hit a single up the middle, allowing Losh to come home. This extended Millersville's lead 6-2. Friese added one more homer on the day to left field, giving Millersville a 9-2 lead at the end of the sixth. Losh, Friese and Wright all finished with three hits. 
Ben Wilchacky, Wyatt Tyson, Christian Wingard, and Andrew Mayhew all worked the mound for the Marauders. Tyson claimed the win and is now 2-2. He struck out five in 2 1/3.

NOTES
• Cook's 12 strikeouts were a career high. It was also his third complete game in his last four starts. 
• Taylor's four hits were a career high. 
 
UP NEXT
• Millersville hosts the quarterfinals of the PSAC Tournament on Wednesday, May 12 with the first pitch at 12 p.m. The Marauders play Shepherd in a single-elimination round. The semifinals and championship rounds are both best-of-three series.
