MILLERSVILLE, Pa. - Dramatic game-tying home runs from Cole Friese and Luke Trainer weren't enough for Millersville Sunday in game one of the best of three PSAC Semifinal series against Bloomsburg. The Huskies had a response for every Millersville rally and took game one 7-6 in 10 innings.
Friese hit a two-out, three-run home run that tied the game at 5-5 in the bottom of the seventh. Then, with Millersville trailing 6-5 in the bottom of the ninth, Trainer worked a full count and was eight pitches into the at-bat when lightning delayed the game for 45 minutes. When the teams returned to the field, Trainer drilled the first offering from Nate Baranski (4-1) over the right field wall, tying the game. But in the 10th, Bloomsburg's Cole Swiger slapped a single to left, scoring Ben Newbert for the go-ahead run, and Baranski bounced back in the bottom of the 10th, closing the door on the Marauders.
Walks plagued Millersville's pitchers, and Bloomsburg took full advantage of the free passes. Millersville walked 12 Bloomsburg batters, and in each inning from the fourth through the ninth, Millersville walked the inning's leadoff batter. Newbert, who scored the eventual game-winning run, was a one-out walk in the 10th. Bloomsburg's first two runs came on solo home runs from Andrew Holmes (second inning) and Carter Chasanov (third inning). Each of the final five runs reached base on a walk.
Bloomsburg built a 3-0 lead, and starter J.J. Spehrley turned in his longest outing in nearly a month, keeping the Marauders scoreless until the fifth when Jimmy Losh came home on a balk. But the theme of the day was Bloomsburg's instant response. In the sixth, Gianni Sinatore drew a leadoff walk, stole second and came home on a Jake Reed sacrifice fly to make the score 4-1.
Millersville's Pete Vacarro singled in Eric Callahan in the bottom of the inning, but again, in the top of the seventh, Bloomsburg pushed the lead back to three when Holmes drove in Chasanov with a single to right. Friese knotted the game at 5-5 in the bottom of the seventh, but Bloomsburg started the ninth with a walk and a single. Tyler Wiik singled to left-center, plating pinch runner Brady Gibble. That broke the tie and set up Trainer's improbable ninth inning home run following the lightning delay.
In the 10th, Newbert walked and moved into scoring position on a ground out. Cole Swiger rolled a single past the dive of Callahan at shortstop, and Newbert raced home for the 7-6 lead. Baranski, who pitched 3 1/3 innings in relief for the win, gave up a two-out single to Tyler Wright in the bottom of the 10th, but scored a strikeout to end the game.
